Heres where I'm at, aside from my multitools ive got 3 folders i switch between to carry:

Benchmade mini grip 556
Ontario RAT 1
Buck vantage 346

I'm looking for an EDC folder that i can really put to work. The RAT is AUS8, the benchmade is far too small for my hand, and the vantage is kind of my formal carry.

My budget is around $120 and under.

The RAT 1 is around perfect size for my hand. I need a steel that has good blade retention for the value (S30V?)

I'm thinking i need a thicker grip because I'm going to abuse the heck out of this thing, indoor and outdoor. The scales will need to be something that can handle some serious EDC punishment.

Ive tried multiple spydercos including PM2s and really dont like them, the thumb hole, the knife feels a bit like a cheap toy the way its weighted, and doesnt have the grip I'm looking for in an abuse knife, so basically spydercos are preferably not something im looking for.

I absolutely love love love the hand on the benchmade grizzly ridge however the blade shape i wasnt sure would be good for normal EDC tasks along with basic outdoor work.

What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

Just saying i do love axis locks/thumb studs but I'm open to suggestions

Why not an upgraded Rat 1 in D2 Steel? Otherwise Steel Will Cutjack/Modus, Kershaw Knockout or Dividend in M390, if you want to try flipper knives. 120$'s budget is kind of inbetween, just below the more expensive knives and a fair bit above the budget class.

If i buy it at my local shop i get free sharpening for life and they dont sell the RATs but they do sell just about every other major brands

Out of those three, the Benchmade Mini Grip 556 will need the least sharpening. I can't say go for the full size Griptilian, as it doesn't have SS liners, like the mini does.

The RAT with D2 steel would be a better choice over the AUS-8 version. Stick with the Nylon scales, and not the Carbon fiber over G-10.

Time to go to a fixed blade in 3V.
No . . . really.
Mine is a Cold Steel Pendleton Hunter in 3V but I can't recommend it without regrinding it thinner (which I did) . . . then you got something.
Largish very solid feeling handle considering the smallish blade size to.

Failing that if you still want to stay with a folder how about a Benchmade Contego in M390.
I don't have one . . . I nearly bought one but then found and went with the Benchmade 710 which was what I wanted but I wanted M390 and wasn't finding it then I did in a special edition.
The contego might be better for you because it is heavier duty and an even larger handle.

. . . so it's $190 . . . what's money when it comes to knives ? Am I right ?
Just ask any of these guys. They'll tell you you were very valiant setting a price limit. That's commendable . . .
But what are limits for ? To go beyond right ?

... Otherwise Steel Will Cutjack/Modus ... in M390

;) Big bang for the buck! I have one of each in the "full size" and find they are a real bargain for the price versus quality. For a ~$50 knife, they may not be up to the Benchmade/Spyderco level but, they also don't carry that ~$200 price point either.

You can get a Benchmade Mini Grip 566 for under just $120.00CAN, plus free shipping.

Where did you get the custom sheath Wowbagger?
It is an off the shelf Cold Steel boot knife sheath called The Peace Maker.
Even comes with a free knife for like $25 ;) :p
PS: doesn't dull the edge like that piece of :poop: the Pendleton Hunter comes with.
PPS: careful how you hold it when you draw the knife; you want your hand well down on the sheath body and not up at the gap for the opening. Other wise it's slice up the fingers time.

Dang... that budget though...lol

Every time I hear/read, "ready to put to work" i think to my G&G Hawk - Mudd... but the price tag is not anywhere near your price range...

I will say, if you wear a belt, DEFINITELY consider an upgaded Buck 110 as an option.

If you love the grizzly I'd say go for it. A buddy of mine carries one with the gut hook and its held up well. I'm sure the blade shape is fine for EDC as long as you can sharpen that recurve.

Some others in your budget worth checking out are the Kershaw blur in s30v and the full size griptilian. If you like the rat 1, you could always get the D2 version. It won't hold an edge as long as s30v but will still be better than aus8.

I like the Mini Griptillian or the full size Griptillian in 20CV ($179 at Knife Center). I've got myself down for both of those knives, AND, I'd like to order one from the Benchmade Custom Shop in M4. They are too good to pass up in the steels they are offering.

the full size Griptillian
That is what I was carrying at work today ! (M390 same dif)
I posted it in another forum earlier so I have the photo right here.
Good sized handle but as was said earlier maybe not the best choice for really hard use due to partial liners not full liners. I like mind though . . . but I'm not a hard use person when if comes to folders.

I'm not sure how a PM2, let alone any Golden, CO Spyderco feels cheap compared to a RAT 1 or nylon mini grip??? But to each their own.

Spyderco really has the ~$100-$120 market cornered, with the Manix 2, PM2, Chaparral, Para 3, Native 5, and so on.

I'd suggest something like a Ferrum Forge/Massdrop Gent or Crux.

I think the Griptillian is a home run for the price and build quality and I hope they sell a million of them.
