So this is the efforts of last weekend, and trying to open people's minds up to entomophagia, or eating bugs. Bugfest strikes again, hopefully opening people's minds and taste buds! Eat em up boys! It just makes it easier to forage when you are outside....

Man, I used to feed silkworms to my bearded dragons when I kept em. If I were out with you Joe, I'd try it, because I'm Cajun, so where do I get off saying no. But dang. Silkworms stank when I used to feed em.

I have a beardie! He likes the juvie bearded dragon food and crickets. Really cool pet. sorry back on topic:

Id try bout anything once. I have a rather adventureous pallette. I watch bizarre foods nightly and some of the stuff that guy eats (bugs included) doesnt look half bad. Some tho is rather ROUGH looking.

If I had to I would, but only if I had to.

You got any pics of people eating that stuff?

hey tony. I'll answer it over there ! cool find!

Man I'd have to be pretty close to starvation to eat those I'm afraid !!!

I'm always trying leaves, roots and berries and I'd not think twice about eating snakes, frogs or lizards but there is just something about tiny hard wings and legs that puts me off bugs !!!!!!

I have eaten a few bugs before but they were always cooked.

If one finds themself in a survival situation and they have fire, is it best to cook creepy crawlys before you eat them? Does it depend on the type of bug?

Pit Jr has eaten them before, I think he had Chilli flavoured meal worms and a Scorpian in a lolly ! He said they were nice but he can be a bit of freak anyway !!!!!

Hats of to your son, cause like you I won't unless neccessary.

Although when I do the RAT course in the Amazon next year, I may not have a choice:eek:

yes to both questions

"Most can be eaten raw although cooking is generally preferred with beetles, their grubs, and grasshoppers, to rid them of parasites."

applying heat to your food (and water) is generally a good way to get rid of lots of nasties

fire is more than just a way to stay warm - it's a way to keep a lot of dangerous organisms out of your body

fire - is there any greater invention? :D

I read about this the other day in the Technician. Looked pretty fun. Sorry I didn't hear about it sooner or I would've gone.

Common after-school snacks for kids all over SE Asia, and cheap street-food walking snacks for adults in night bazaars.
Most are cooked. The grubs have the spongy texture of tofu that's been frozen and thawed, and are very, very sweet. When eating the beetles and other large hard-shelled bugs, one snaps off the legs and wings and squeezes the insides out... Smaller hard-shelled bugs usually get fried and just get the legs and wings snapped off. I tried them all. Personally... I'll stick to lobster!
