Real Bug Eating.

This is a little of topic but does anyone else get hungry when they see grasshoppers?

I took an outdoors survival school where we did a little bug eating...it was okay; about the only thing I liked were grasshoppers and grubs, but they had to be roasted first!

I spent a tour in Korea and you would be amazed at the insect snack foods they have:eek:

My son wants to try grasshoppers next time we're out, so that'll be fun. I think most of us here could tolerate it in a real survival situation, but I do recommend you try it sometime just to know how to prepare and what to expect. It's more of a mental struggle than fear of taste...

If one finds themself in a survival situation and they have fire, is it best to cook creepy crawlys before you eat them? Does it depend on the type of bug?
Grubs aren't bad raw. Military survival training focuses heavily on insects because in a E&E situation, it may well be all you have. For obvious reasons, fishing and setting a bunch of snares may be out of the question or detrimental to your life expectancy.

Roasting on a rock is ok. Best is to boil it into a stew IMO, especially if you have a bullion cube (or fish or meat) to make it more palatable. I like to keep a few bullion cubes in my packs.

I've often considered eating bugs in the field...I'd like to find some real info on it, as I'm not real sure if all kinds are good to eat. I heard most if not all should be cooked however to avoid parasites.

'Grasshoppers' made by the Keebler elves are pretty good - makes my mouth water. A stew made out of 'Bugs' wouldn't be too bad - Elmer seemed to have lots of trouble catching him, however. Of course, a large aquatic cockroach, sold down at the grocers as 'lobster', isn't too shabby, either.

Now, creepy-crawly forest denizens, that's another matter. Watching Bear Grylls dine down on gooey creatures and termites is close enough for me. I did eat chocolate covered ants, grasshoppers, and bees... in the sixth grade... in science class... in Bayside, LI, NY... when JFK was debating Nixon (Been a while!). That was like from 'Krackle' to crunchy bits of chocolate covered chicken. Could they be chocolate covered now for me to join the dinner party? I bring extra food when I camp. I obviously haven't missed a meal since 'Woodstock'.

I forgot to add, roasted ants are pretty good. Takes a mess of them to add up to anything, but you can just keep tossing them in your canteen cup and boil them. They are sweet.

Man, I used to feed silkworms to my bearded dragons when I kept em. If I were out with you Joe, I'd try it, because I'm Cajun, so where do I get off saying no. But dang. Silkworms stank when I used to feed em.

I have a bearded dragon and thats what I feed her along with superworms, crickets etc.

They all stink to some degree, I guess if you get past the smell the crunch aint so bad.

I have eaten bugs before and most of its just mentally getting past what your eating.

I've eaten a LOT of creepy sh@t. Cooked bugs don't really bother me. It's the slimy creatures or rotten poopy tasting creatures that get me. I WON'T eat them. It doesn't do you any good if you can't keep them and your little bit of precious body fluids you have left down. I am also not a big fan of wings. If I can, I like to pull them off first, before I eat it.

same with grasshopper legs for me. The poppy ones...hahah I know exactly what you are talking about. Slugs are a no no unless something is done to prepare them, to me.

Have eaten raw, crix, mealworms and rinsed earthworms- like a dirt sandwhich, they go down but not much to brag on. Will have to try cooking some one day. How are helgromites?? Plenty of those buggers in about every rocky stream.

My Dragons like wax worms. Tried maggots with my Leo's but they must have been too bitter :)

I've eaten my fair share of tequila worms, but at that point in the bottle, almost anything goes.
