Real or fake?

Thanks, Waynorth.
So can you also answer my other question about why anyone would bother making a Case Trapper copy that’s so far off from an original?

As Brother Jim said, Welcome!

Now to your question...Knife collectors that hang out on sites like this might see this as an across the room fake. However, this knife would be appealing to many other people, remembering a knife like this that perhaps their grandpa carried, and the way they remember it, it sure does look just like it.

Since Case has been a huge name in cutlery for decades, it's a no brainer that this brand would be counterfeited. They don't need to sell them all, just a portion of them for it to be profitable.

Perhaps what comes off as snobby-ness to you might just be people that have handled a lot of knives, and maybe even made a mistake or two in their collecting over the years. Whether you stay or not is up to you. I find this forum as a whole, and the Traditional forum in particular, as a place where when members get to know you, they'd literally give you the shirt off their own back (and probably with a knife in the pocket as well).

And here's a picture of a knife I just picked up that was not what I thought it was, so lesson learned by me!!!

I think it would be good to have a thread for people to post questions about the authenticity of vintage knives. It could be a very educational thing, to learn to spot outright fakes, as well as post-factory modifications, counterfeit tang stamps, etc. The problem is that some people can perceive criticism of a knife (especially criticism of a knife purchase) personally, and read the room as full of grumpy old guys just being mean. Some of us may be grumpy old guys, but mostly well-intentioned. ;)

Not what you thought it was? I'd be interested in hearing about what it is.

Since waynorth has weighed in, I'd agree with his opinion on this one. Nothing looks right to me on that knife, as to the vintage. I'm not aware Case ever used stainless steel in any of their knives from the 'Tested' era, at the very least. Too many other things looking much more recent than that as well. I'm reminded of the advice from Bernard Levine on topics like this: "Read the knife", and don't be misled by suspicious markings otherwise. Nothing about this one reads right to me, as to the purported vintage implied by the stamp.

When I first looked at the knife, it had the initial look of a Rodgers knife. It even had hallmarks on the back side of the tang.

The seller was even pushing that story as well. I know it's not his job to convince me otherwise, and I would assume with all the other nice stuff he had that he knows "what he has". I went down my own path, and he didn't stop me. I didn't read the knife well enough, I was caught up in finding something cool. A quick google search would have told me that Wazirabad is in Pakistan. I have seen many Pakistan knives of that vintage that were made to look like Sheffield knives.

I still like the knife a lot, but probably at a bit less than what I paid. Lesson learned, read the knife, dummy!

That being said, because I’ve used Case and Solingen made Bokers my whole life, I think I know a good $125 EDC when I see one. Like you said, you have an opinion— just like everyone else and I don’t need to be talked down to by you or anyone else on this forum and can assure you that I can take good advice of various sorts, but not belittling advice. You and some others here I’ve already met can take that $15 crap advice to somebody else. There’s good folks everywhere, and bad. Hope there’s more good ones here—and there likely is—than I’ve bumped into today, that can ACTUALLY make someone feel welcome—and I don’t mean by just saying, welcome and then go into a flex of, listen to me for I am god.
Hey, how bout this little piece of advice that I shouldn’t have to be sharing with adults: Let someone come in and help them feel comfortable for a little while, at least, before taking pot shots.
From pretty much right out the gate I’ve been hit lightly with ill will and snobbery.
I’ve done nothing to incite this and have only asked for an answer, not unwelcoming emojis with short retorts.

I don't see where anyone tried to belittle you or make you feel unwelcome. You asked a question about the authenticity of a knife and, though you are lacking the required membership level, also began a discussion of value. From my perspective, a couple people presented an idea of what the knife in question would be worth to them - and you didn't like their opinions. That's okay, they're just the opinions of some people on the internet. I can buy a knife I really like from the gas station for $9.99 and refer to it as a "million dollar knife" - but that doesn't mean anyone will be willing to offer me a million dollars for it. I think your "Great $125 EDC" label would carry about as much weight with an appraiser as my "million dollar knife" moniker.

I've found this particular section of the forum to be one of the warmest and most inviting spaces on the internet, populated with people who are incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and generous beyond description. I've retired from Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and the like because I became aware of how the constant toxicity was impacting my state of mind. In other words, I think you got the vibe here all wrong - this ain't that. This is a unique space filled with a collection of simply wonderful folks.

Tell you what, I already know how this will go, so I’ll see myself out. You can miss me with all them well spun replies that might could’ve somehow salved your nasty consciences. Your loss, not mine.
Maybe a few of you folks here suffering from superiority complexes, or azzholeyness can learn something from my short membership.

Ok, bye. Sorry this forum didn't provide the kind of experience you were looking for.

You know, the next time you jump in to an online knife forum, maybe let them know that you already have your mind made up about both the authenticity and value of the knife in question and aren't really looking for information even though the post is phrased that way. It might also help to inform them that you have a tendency toward extreme sensitivity, and to request that they please keep the kid gloves on until you feel more comfortable participating in the discussion. The funny part is that this is one of the few online groups that I can think of that would actually entertain honoring such a request.

Enjoy your knife and best of luck to you going forward.

Just so you know there is / was no intended criticism of you whatsoever, this is all about the knife in question.
There was no intention to make you feel bad about having bought the knife either, but it seems like you may have been hoping to hear that this is a top notch knife even if it doesn't turn out to be authentic.
I can't speak to others, but I chose not to hold back my feelings on this knife because I have made mistakes in other hobbies that I continued to make until someone spoke up and helpfully bursted my bubble.

Hmmm. And now of a sudden I don’t know how to perceive rough treatment from shit heads, either. Jeeez. Never been so inept at things till I came here.
Since I also couldn’t figure out how to kick myself outta this rotten, roach infested place last night, maybe I can get the moderators to banish me from this shit stop.

As far as reading over a few lines from some of the replies posted since last night, I can’t remember hearing so much drivel and tripe since listening to clips from msnbc or cnn.
This place reeks of blue assholes and dead scarecrows. Lol. FJB and all y’all too.

Feel free to continue applying salve to each other’s ass holes. You’ve been well reamed, and mostly, you’ve done it to yourselves.

Good insights from the rest of you though. Shame that this thread turned into... something else.
