i know some might not believe in this type of thing....but i hunt wild hogs alot with a recurve and no dogs....now im gonna go with abuddy and dogs. its to risky for the dogs to use a bow. so what buck knife would you guys suggest. i have a 119, 2 kalingas, and 6-7 different alpha fix blades. any certain steel?

any help is appreciated...thanks guys

I'd go with a 120 to kill. Something else to dress...Kalinga seems cool....or a Buck Skinner (I think the old model was a 503...I'm to lazy to look in my closet). But some of the big time hunters here will chime in with their recommendations.
I think they're like women (knife choice, not pigs). Everyone has a diff opinion.

i forgot to add, these arent huge pigs either, they're around 50-175# or so....i just keep thinking my kalinga in s30v looks like it would do the job. i'm not sure though...i'm just a novice at pig knives:)

I'd go for the Kalinga in S30V... Just because its one of my favs!
I dont think blade steel will matter, they are all great!

lemme see if I got this right...You're hunting wild boars as heavy as you are, with only a knife...Is that right???

If it was me, I would have a Buck 120 muffler-clamped to a long (10 foot or so) stout stick...

But no matter if you wrestle them bare handed or stick them with a javelin...we want PICS!!! :D:thumbup:

Have one of your buddies carry a digi-camera and then post the movie...Man vs Animal!!! :)

Hey Bailebr3 ,Yes, Down here the guys that use dogs to go after wild hogs are
very brave. They have chase dogs and catch or hold dogs. The hold dogs
holds the hog and then ,( you will like this part trax) some one reaches
in with a Knife and cuts the hogs throat.Brave ..............

If I had a Kalinga or 119 then that is what I would use.

I have a 120 that is a little longer than the 119 But I am not brave enough to play this game.;)So there you go.
Happy Hunting

bailebr3, you’re going to use a bow to kill these beasts right? You want the knife for dressing’m out? I think the Kalinga will be perfect for the job.

Yep, Hawkeye has it absolutely correct!! And Trax, some of those hogs here are much, much larger than the hunter; I'm with you in that I would want a knife attached to a very long pole indeed! It's not a sport for the weak of heart.

well lets put it this way ...
a critter big enugh to hurt ya realy realy bad ...
and ya is a going to cut its throat and if that dont work..
stick it in the heart ..
ya jest gotta want the Max Blade ya can get!!
any thing less would be ... fool hardy ...

i would use nothting less then a 124!!!!

i think im going to go with the kalinga in s30v. and yeah its gonna be a rush for sure. the hold dogs will usually have the pig by the ears or even the snout, depending on how many dogs, sometimes a back leg also. if the hog is light enough you grab the free back leg...pick him up some and go in right beside his armpit...gets lung and heart

i also thought about last december when i had to finish off a smallish hog (120#) that i had shot with my bow. i used my fixed blade alpha/ rosewood. and once i field dressed him i saw that the knife got completely through the heart...so i guess its like with any kill shot...its might not be the size....its key placement:)

When the dogs(catch dog makes it easier) have the hogs busy reach in and grab a rear leg and jerk the hog off balance then use a 120 to the heart
it's over quickly....vines blow downs and rough terrain makes it more exciting.
A hog cannot turn it's head but will spin around very quickly,as long as you keep a good grip on the rear leg you should be ok:D
Have fun:D
I used a 151 Buck to dress and skin a couple of hogs this year.

I'd go with the 120 or 124, I've used an old Western W49 and a USMC Kabar in the swamps of S. Fl.

cool pic earl!! ill keep that info in mind...that is true, they cant turn their heads...they alwys just spin around

Hey Hawk, sounds a little hypocritcal to me....just looking at your avatar anyway. I bet you caught that papermouth with a hook and then, while holding it down, finished it off with that 110??? How brave is that??:rolleyes::D:D
Two of my favorite hobbies in one thread, crappie fishing and hog hunting!!

well ya knows pilgram ... once i was a bouncer in a south side ft worth bar..
and i some how feels when it comes to danger operations its still like i heard a group of factory working gals say ...
if'n ya 'tant got skill or ya's miss the mark... then size does mater!

true 334dave...you do need skill. my buddy that im going with has only trapped them and hunted them with dogs and a knife. he said hunting them with a rifle and handgun got boring:) i'm not bored of hunting them with my traditional bow yet.....the knife hunting is just a lil different pace from what i'm use to....so what is the overall blade length on the 120. i want to compare to what he uses. all i know is its not a buck!

7 3/8" blade & 12" OAL on my two 120's...

Looking at that pic up above...I don't see any tusks...(I think they're called tusks)...Are those females???

My Cabela's Pro Line 120 is a great hunting knife...I'll go rabbit hunting with mine as soon as I can find an old hunting license... ;)

thanks for the measurements...they dont have to have visible tusks to be male...it depends on age, genetics, and food sources. ive got a 275# boar head mounted and his tusks( cutters) are only 2.75". he just got big before his teeth did:) but just like a deer rubs his antlers on a tree, so does hogs. they will actually cut into the tree with their tusk( marking territory).
