Interesting, I received the latest issue of "Tactical Knives" today. They had an aritcle "The Real SEAL Knife: Here It Is!". The article does admit that many knives are used by the SEALs but state the Ontario Mk-3 (Mod O) is the most used. Ontario Mk-3: 6" SS blade, high-strength plastic handle, steel butt with a plastic sheath with nylon belt loop & wire belt hanger.

Is the Ontario really THE seal knife or is this just advertising? I think I would stick with the SOG Seal Knife and/or my Seal Pup Elite.

There is no "SEAL, tactical mall ninja, or operator knives" anywhere ever. Real seals and people of that nature either use what they like (often a multitool and a kabar) and if there is something mission specific it would probably be farmed out though a government contract just liek they do with guns and eveyrthing else. If you want a knife that will stand up to anything get a Busse and you will never look back. If you want cool looks and to be anle to say this is what SEALs use, then get any mall ninja knife off QVC. The SOG SEAL PUP is a very popular knife and I dont fault it for the price and the Mk-3 is very nice. Id go with the Ontario or a Busse but if you have a SOG already theres no reason to ditch it. I havent liked some of teh SOG folders but the fixed blade ones I have owned all held up very well.

The MK3 was issued to us in BUDS when I came in (98). It was then being phased out by the Cold Steel SRK. The Teams issued differant knives at the time, depending (it seemed) on who was doing the purchasing. Depending on where you were, and who you were, you could end up with anything from a Cammilus pilots knife to a Mad Dog. Now, the standard item is the SEAL pup. Other knives show up from time to time, but that is the stock item. I personally think we could do alot better, but for a pretty much disposable knife it's not that bad. Most everyone has their own favorite and will carry what they want. Many people just carry a folder, to save room, since we already have so much gear strapped to us.
I haven't read the article you mention, but 9 out of 10 articles concerning "SEAL issue" are total BS. Show me a guy that was issued a Luminox somewhere!
Hope that helps!

Big Jim and I were typing at the same time. Agree with him 100%, and I also carry a Busse (or ten).
