real simple EDC idea?

I never see anybody with a belt sheath unless its hunting season. The thickness of scales and a heavy duty sheath, possibly a kydex lined leather sheath would be a pocket full. I say "thin is in".

Thin is a really solid way to go. I am always hell bent on sculpting handles, but it's probably just not needed on a little utility piece.

I decided on some of the things I didn't like about this, and hopefully that will result in something a little snazzier.

Thanks everybody for adding their thoughts and helping me see this in a different light so I could make some positive progress!!! :D

Man Im glad thin is in!!! I been making knives with 1/8" stock for almost 10 years despite the thick trend;)

I'll second the thin knives. Love em! The thickest knife I own and do like is the F1. I liked Bark River knives but they would use the same stock on a 3" blade as they did for a 9" blade. It was like a wedge not a knife blade.

I would beg to differ bud , a utility piece is going to get far more use , therefor the handle should be sculpted , rounded , etc to make it as comfortable as possible. As Coop said in the other thread , you can have both , looks and function , but it is certainly not needed.

At the Vegas show I saw some knives that looked awesome , until you picked them up. Why have an awesome looking knife with only moderate "feel" ? Rather than look at a knife , I prefer to use it.

As brother Trace says " The handle is yer user interface , make it comfortable to use , or it won't get used. "

If true utility is what you are after , and an every day user , well ya just don't see people carrying around fixed blades much unless the blade is 3 - 3 3 1/2 , maybe 3 3/4 , especially in the city.

I like where you are going with this bud...

I realize now we're talking about thin steel, and I thought we were talking thin handles. I've always been big on going thinner, rather than thicker, for steel selection.

Thanks John! :)

I would never send one out that has any sharp corners or anything like that, but when I said not sculpting I was thinking like a lot of Tom Krein's little utility pieces. The handles are thin (and comfy!) but not with palm swells or palm recesses. Does that make sense?

Thanks everyone, please keep your thoughts coming :)

That works , I thought you were referring to basic flat scaled non-rounded handles that many seem to like to make.

Maybe just take a hammer and tap on the tang a few times for giggles ;)

I made many not so very different for use as hunting knives. 4' is lots of blade even for a hunter but a little less works as good. I would like to suggest that the built in finger guard be a bit longer to prevent your hand from running forward.
Lovely looking work for sure !!!!! Frank

I thought we were talking about an EDC (every day carry) here. How many people do you see with a sheathed knife on their belt unless its like a leatherman or similar folding knife? I think if its a EDC it should be carried in the front or back pocket. In either case it needs to be a thin handle. Is this a utility knife or an EDC? I confuse easily.

A smaller fixed blade , say 3 - 3 1/2 you dont need to see , at 3" I can legally carry it concealed , and have carried a fixed blade concealed daily for 3 straight years now. Just cause you don't see it , don't mean it aint there. :D

For me , pocket carry of a fixed blade doesn't work , takes up to much room in the pocket and is not comfortable for driving or doing daily tasks.

Interesting posts on what constitutes an EDC. For me, it's certainly different in town than when camping or goofing off in the woods.

The legality issue is important too, although frustrating. In my state, knife laws are almost purposely vague when it comes to concealed carry; in fact, you could interpret them to say anything concealed is prohibited, which means if my Becker Necker is tucked in an inside pocket of my jacket, I'm illegal

I still think it's a good design.

As always, there's no lifeguard on duty, so swim/carry at your own risk.

Nick,
I think they look great I my self like a thin blade and thin handle. they are easier on the eyes.

Bruce, you're not confused... I probably just used the wrong term. How about "handy little knife" rather than EDC... :D

I only carry a sheath knife if I'm hiking, fishing, or out in the woods for some other reason. So I'm thinking of something in those terms. A small-ISH knife that a guy or gal could throw in their back pack, on their belt or in the desk drawer and use it for general cutting tasks.

nick-i think a handy little knife fo rdaily carry would be betetr but that's just me....i live in a city and carrying a knife in a sheath is a big no-no....i like bruce's idea of a pocket sheath or maybe a kydex with a small tek lok that you could adjsut horizontally so it's not really seen.....if i was buying it i'd wanna see a nice thin blade and a slim handle....nice and compact but with as large a cutting edge you could have.....as for the handle.....i don't necessarily need a full countoured handle....i think for everyday chores i don't really need it.....i'm not batoning firewood everyday with it:D.....i hope that helps some if any.......granted i live in a city....i do carry alot of different fixed blades and have come to like alot of different styles but......anyway hope that helps u......ryan

Oh you mean a HLK and not an EDC. Chances are when you need the knife it will be in your back pack or desk drawer but you will be outside or downtown without it.:D

BAH!!! This coming from a guy that makes pistols with knives in them!!! :p :D

John, the EDK that I make with the swiveling belt/pocket clip on it is very comfortable in every day use and carries comfortably in the front pocket. Well, I'm 6'1 or so but Lorien wears his in his front pocket and he rides a bike every where.

It's a great looking knife, Nick, similar to the profile of your OSF. Although it appears that they are already ground, I'd prefer a convex ground EDC/field knife for a blade as thin as this. Also, if I were to use it as a back-up knife, I'd prefer a steel with corrosion resistance, such as S30V.

However, I think my suggestion would increase the price...
