Real, Usable Sword Cane/staff?

that's actually pretty cool, but for the record, let me go ahead and clarify something

I have been joking for most of this thread. My Bo is my preferred weapon if i ever actually NEEDED a weapon other than my tomahawk or bushman.

I like the idea of a sword concealed in a staff, just for the cool factor... i don't have one, and i want to. Would i actually USE it? almost certainly not. Anywhere that i could carry a sword cane, i could much more easily carry my Para

A seam to remember seeing a katana style sword cane made by a maker in South Africa that really looked like a walking stick. I can’t seem to find it on the net any more. I got to handle one in person and it was really well made, it actually looks like a tree branch. I can’t remember the makers name.

Ed,
I think that you are thinking of Burger out of south africa. Their stuff rocks! http://www.swordcane.com/ This is their website. Beautiful work.

OK, so you are telling us that you've been trolling this whole time???

Honestly, seeing some of the stuff you've posted today (multiple forums with similar subjects, etc.) I'm kind of feeling like I shouldn't have wasted my time in the Busse forum trying to help you. :thumbdn: :grumpy:

i think you've missed something... i wasn't even remotely trolling.

I'm most certainly interested in getting a sword cane as described although now that i'm looking for an AK47, that's on hold. I was kidding about making it a primary means of defense. I was being ironic when i said i would use a weapon i had no training in rather than a BoStaff which i have extensive training in.

As to the posts today, i'm very genuinely looking for information on my next purchase. I was planning originally to by a $300-$400 Wakizashi of some sort, but i have become highly enamored of the INFI series blades, so i'm seeking information on them

Sometimes I enjoy being goofy, but i DO NOT troll

A few thoughts on sword canes/sticks: they reached the height of popularity during the Victorian period, however most were not really carried as serious weapons; the little pocket pistol (Derringer) would have been preferred (and likely carried in tandem with their sword cane/walking stick) by the well heeled and wealthier gentleman. One of the main problems with either the cane sword/stick is that the lower portion was/is nothing more than a scabbard. By its nature, being hollowed for the blade, the structural integrity of the cane or staff is compromised. Any serious lateral impact could cause the shaft portion housing the blade to fail. Another problem with sword canes is that they're noisy: unless tolerances are kept very tight or some method of dampening vibration of the blade against the walls of the shaft can be fabricated, the cane/stick/staff will rattle. The last consideration is blade size. Most of the Victorian sword canes were actually more like very slender long knives/short swords of the ice pick variety. Some were like a modern épée - a hollowed triangular configuration or a very slender rapier type blade. The width of the blade would be quite important as anything more than an 1½" - 1¾" will create an unwieldy cane or staff. Blade shape was generally straight; Japanese style blades are pretty difficult to disguise due to the curvature. Most of the real, period Shikomizue look exactly like what they are: a cane/staff hiding a sword, unless the sori was very, very shallow. In short, if you wanted a really nice sword staff/cane for your collection you'd likely have to go the custom route as most modern production sword canes/staffs (google-fu) look pretty cheesy IMO.

If you really want a quality sword stick, I second the Burger vote.

Anyone know of a maker that makes them actually look like a stick? Like the old Japanese sword canes (SHIKOMI-ZUE) that looked like a branch from a pine.

Unfortunately I can't help you there! My guess is it would be hella expensive though.

the only one i've ever seen that was worth half a damn was made by company called "cane&things" about 15-20 years ago but they're no longer in business. if i remember correctly that company was either bought by or was already owned by the same bunch that run angelsword.

i remember seeing the canes&things booth one year at the texas renfest, then the following year angelsword had the same booth and a few of the old pieces were still for sale there. the 3 pieces i distincly remember were a large chunk of 3 inch bamboo at almost 6-7 foot long with a slightly curved blade in it, a cane with a foot and a half of braided cable insted of a blade, and another cane that was a blowgun. it was all very well built and high quality stuff, but they were also very exspensive.

it lacks a certain "Tacticool" feel that you get from carrying a sword which you are grosely undertrained to use.
You answered a bunch of questions with this here, and the answer is "leave the friggin swords alone."

The Cold Steel heavy sword cane might be an option. They are made quite well. Just a thought.

I have a suggestion regarding a staff. I've been using seamless titanium tubing in 4 or 5 foot lengths to make walking sticks. Lol, my family and a couple of friends all have one. Ti is sourced from eBay. I buy 1" diameter with a wall thickness of .050 or so. Get the grade 5, or grade 9 Titanium Alloy. You will have a fairly light, stiff, walking stick/weapon. You can customize as you like... Strike knob on top, or sharpened crenelated edges. Lot of possibilities. I've included smaller diameter Titanium capsules inside a couple of my sticks. Look and wait, good tubing comes up for $10/foot. I've paid less at times. I use Grab On brand foam bicycle grips. I drill a lanyard hole, install a lanyard. On the end I install a 1" cane tip with a couple quarters inside the tip to prevent the Ti tube from cutting through the soft rubber.

Comment on Cold Steel canes. I've owned two. The Heavy Duty Sword Cane is a club. It has a Aluminum shaft maybe 1-1.5 mm thick. Built like a tank. But, it was heavy, the handle was uncomfortable, with no real secure grip without holding the shaft itself. The empty cane tube would make a weapon by itself.

I currently have the "Slim Stick". IMO this thing is great. First of all it is 39" tall, it fits me better than the shorter CS canes. It is also very light CF and can be swung very fast. CS claims it is almost unbreakable. I'll buy another Slim Stick I like them that much. Edit, I did order another Slim Stick. $38 on sale during Black Friday :)

Rader Blade Works in my humble opinion makes about the best sword cane/staff there is. He understands what is needed as he is a serious practitioner (and I know him personally) They look like real canes and real walking sticks. The pricing is good and he uses good materials and does great work as an ABS Master Maker. He is easy to contact and if you go to his site you can find his phone number and other information as well as photos of finished work.

Sorry. I've stopped making staffswords and sword-canes quite a while ago.

And, hey guys, it's the "Sword" Discussion forum. If he wants a staffsword, then don't tell him to get a stick or carry a gun. He said he wants more toys, so be it.

Wow! Not one person answered his question. Just a lot of advice.

Wow, you zombied up a two year old thread just to chastise people for not answering a question...and then you didn't answer the question.
