realistic bug-out situations?

I can see the need to have a bug out bag if you live near any big city in the , there quite a lot of people that aren't too happy with the u.s. both aboard and homegrown. The following are some of the potential threats

1 Bio terrorist attack this something that will probably occur in the next 20 years unless we resolve things in the middle east.

2 Chemical attack. This is probably not a good reason to bug out unless its happens within a few mile radius from where you live, or the drinking water supply has been compromised.

3. Nuclear, recent events I don’t think that it was something we truly had to worry about except the threat coming from Mother Russia, but with money strap countries like Korea and Iran being able to produce plutonium. It is only a matter of time before both technology and material find it’s way in the hands of people willing to use it. You must remember that these people believe they are dying for God, so when anyone is willing to give u their life, its next to impossible to stop them.

4. Eco disaster and change, if you live in California, when the big one comes. All hell is going to break out and the police will not be able to protect you, your house may be in ruins, or maybe unsafe to stay because of the possibility of an aftershock . Your next door neighbors who are less prepared than yourself may feel that you shouldn’t be sleeping in your tent in a nice warm sleeping bag when he freezing his butt off and take things into his own hands.

5. Eco change, sponsored report by the pentagon indicates that if global warming continues to climb, islands will disappear and chaos will break out world wide because of famine and drought will be world wide. Countries such as western Europe and the u.s. will have a huge influx of illegal immigration not that we don’t have that problem now. But just think of the u.s. containing 1 billion people versus the 275 million we have now can you imagine the kind of shortages that we would have. With shortages will ultimately lead to violence.

As for myself I’m going to play the bug out situation by ear. I have truck which has been converted to diesel. Reason being gas shortages may occur in times of crisis but diesel will always be there in buses and other heavy duty vehicles. I’ve converted mind so it can run off of both diesel and regular kitchen oil. Frame has been reinforced so I can ram things and push things out of my way. Body panels have been lighten and reinforce to give it some protection against bullets and what not. Tires are run flat type of tires shocks are adjustable type so I can lower the truck to insure fast turns at relatively high speed or raise it up a bit to get over small obstacle. Underside of the truck has a shield to protect it going off road. No its not a four by four, but I think this truck can take most trails, if you take it slow and easy. I have all the parts to rebuild the alternator, replace waterpump, fuel pump, hoses, and some engine and tranny parts that are deemed high failure parts small portable air pump, quick starter and tire repair kit.. Keep in mind that every single part on this truck is brand new. Minus tranny which has 5 k on it.

As for the bug out kit basically I have my must have things and my nice to have kit. The list in the kit is way too long to list, but I basically have everything that you can want, and lots of books on cd small solar panels and enough to make a portable generator to make electricity. You guys may want to add stuff like vegetable seeds for long term bug out Pick out the hardest type of vegetables that will last the longest.

This is an old question: if I am building a BOB, what are some of the useful items, I should consider?

Depends on what you want your BOB to do for you. Do you just want it to help you get home? Do you want it to help you survive outdoors for a few days?

Also, do you live and work in a primarily urban or suburban setting?

I keep a bug out bag for trips, and in general for unforeseen things, like Rainer blowing it's top, or being stuck in a different town when the electricity goes out. Anything can happen, natural or man made. If you have a few days of food, some shelter, and first aid, you'll do okay till you can get to someplace better. Add to that a form of self defence and food gathering, and it gets better.

Anything can happen at any time. A BOB is simply a way to make the transition easier.

a b.o.b. for me would not necessarily focus on bugging out but it does allow for much needed items in an emergency. I carry what could be concidered B.O.B itemss in the truck and at home just as a case of being prepeared plus it is a good excuse to by dubles of things :)

The area I live in has long had a county wide bug out plan because we have an Allied Chemical plant in the county so that would seem the most primary situation where I live but even then my best B.O.B. item would be my wallet.

If you choose to bug-out, you need someplace to go, otherwise you are much better off remaining in place. My Bug-Out Bag (BOB) is more a place to keep stuff so I know where it's located. The fact that I can pick it up and throw it behind the seat of my truck is nice, because when I travel it rides along.

I live in the burbs of Southern California. In case of a major evacuation, such as Thanksgiving, the roads/interstates turn into long parking lots. Unless I had knowledge beforehand that the general public did not have (highly unlikely) the decision to bug-out would be misguided. My other home is in WA State and for a number of reasons that's where I'd bug-out to. It's a long drive, so I'd need a head start.

Bugging-in is a much better option. Stockpile food, keep lots of water available and fortify your home. Talk to your neighbors and see who's a player.

Obviously, my opinion, YMMV.

my bob is actually a bov (bug out vest) i have an eagle tac. vest set up with survival gear and tools. it also holds some mainstay food ration bars. i keep a camelback (unfilled) inside the built in pouch. if the water source is polluted i have 5 bottles of water tabs for purification. you can hold plenty of gear and be able to move quicker which i felt was more important.
of course i have a pack too.

An online novel, "Things Fall Apart" by Fred Heiser that's a fairly good read.
Thanks, interesting "novel". It desperately needs some editing but makes some good points and is right on regarding SOCAL traffic and needing a place to bug-out to.

With shelter taken care of, it comes down to water, food and security -- water being the most critical.

Yep Seth, that happened to me a time or two. If ya live hard, it's bound to happen sooner or later and it's certainly a realistic survival situation. Especially if there's only one vehicle and she's got the keys.
