So I purchased MY first Case knife today. In thought of where to place this thread, I chose general discussions as opposed to a Case sub forum, as this may be more about me, than the knife. However, since this is a knife forum, I'll get the stats out of the way before I blabber.
1. Plain ol' U.S.A. CV Trapper in yellow.
2. A whopping $28 at our local family owned outfitters
So now to expand on my statement. Today I purchased my 8th Case brand knife, but as previously noted, the first for me. Over the years I'd often purchase them as gifts for Grandpas and "old fellas" alike, never once with even the slightest desire to drop one in my own pocket. I would look right over them, as if they weren't even there...until today. Now I am no greenhorn, I have carried and collected since 1986. I did not cut my teeth in the late "tacticool age", and while I collect like most here, I tend to view knives as tools. How could it be, until today, I failed to see the sheer beauty, and functionality of a slip joint pocket knife. It sits in my lap, as I type, gleaming of simplicity, strength, and finish. I've immediately succumbed to this infatuation, and shopping other Case knives now.
I suppose however my question to the blade forum community is, has your taste in knives changed, with a direct correlation to age. Today is my birthday, and I walked into a brick and mortar to purchase myself a Case. You see, I'm perhaps confounded in whether or not today was a REALIZATION that slip joint pocket knives are awesome, or a REVELATION that I am now the "old fella".
So everyone...
1. Have you changed, if so how.
2. What's the consensus on the next Case
3. Am I old?

Ha! Carrying my case peanut with me today at the office for first time in a month or two.

My first knives in the late 70s/early 80s were all slipjoints when I was a kid. Still have a small buck from this era so nothing new for me. However, I gravitate towards modern knives more thes days.

Thanks JBoone. I gravitate towards fixed blade knives. In one iteration or another a fixed blade has been on my hip for the last 29 years. I've only between 28-29 folders in my collection but this new infatuation is gunna be costly. Peanut huh?....

I kept trying to replace my carry with a slip joint. It always lasted until I only had one hand free.

So I carry a SAK and a modern knife. Maybe, one day, when I don’t have one handed tasks, or I grow a third arm, my main knife will be a slip joint.

See I'm sure that was always one of my excuses too. "What do you mean it folds but doesnt lock"...However I do carry a fixed blade everyday, so I'm gunna try out the combo. After a few days at work, I may be running right back to the Axis lock.
But at the least for collecting...I'm now hooked

image.jpg Happy birthday! Yes my taste in knives has changed, I use a peanut buck 375 F? Can't tell if that's correct cause I can barley see it, the writing is so small. Lol I never liked slip joints, now I do. For all the reasons you've mentioned, they are very cool.

I don't have any case knives as of now. I'm always looking at traditional knives but not buying to many. I'll probably thin out some of my other knives first. Maybe after the holidays, welcome to bladeforums.

Exactly this! I was always in envy of the traditionals my grandfathers carried, and drooled over them in the case at the store, and eventually owned a few. Today more often than not I need a knife that deploys and locks with one hand because the other hand is occupied. I do have a few Alox SAKs and a viper ez open for fun and back up.

Thank you!
I may be in it for the cool. Slowing my pocket down to a slip joint pace, everyday may indeed be tiring. For collecting purposes however, I may be in to a new thing!
So many colors, materials, and designs, at affordable prices!

The convenience of a modern locking folder is difficult to overstate. The clip means I know right where it is and don’t have to dig in my pocket, I can fully operate it with one hand, and I don’t have any concern about it closing on my fingers (admittedly, that’s still pretty low even with slippies.)

The tradeoff is that it is immediately apparent to others that I am carrying a knife, the knife doesn’t have much in the way of charm to it, and it is more likely to put people on edge (especially if you prefer 3.5-4” blades)

I got pretty big into traditionals for a while, and had more or less convinced myself that anything else was unnecessary, but... convenience makes a big difference, and I ultimately ended up moving almost entirely away from traditional slipjoint knives and back to modern folders.

I had a somewhat similar experience with a kitchen knife. I bought a budget chefs knife for my stepdad and checked it out and it's kinda neat and I might buy one for myself, I was used to using the typical plastic handle cheapo knives which kinda work basically, but something a little nicer is....nice. (Actually bought my first slip joint as well for myself, gonna see how I like carrying one, I wanted to try going legal since I wanted something I can carry in public as opposed to just as work.)

Here is the peanut with a Vic classic for size comparison. The peanut is small but gets the job done for most light tasks.

Hahaha OP!

I genuinely laughed at your thread because I got my first Case delivered yesterday, also a Trapper CV but in Amber Bone! Love it and I’m not dissimilar in my approach - definitely getting old[er]. Just ordered a Texas Jack. I seem to have inadvertently stepped onto a slope and it doesn’t feel very grippy....

For me, knives are like skis, boots, guns and bikes. What looks good on paper and works for me after 6 months or so of use are different things.

I find that for me, I need to try things for a good long while to find out if it works for me.

For example, I dearly love the old Schrade 5OT, but it frustrates me before lunchtime so I never carry it.

Would love to hear back on this thread in 6 months.

I find non knife people show more interest in slip joints and are not intimidated when I use it in public. As I have aged, I have gone back to this design and really enjoy them now more than ever.

Yeah, I'm mentally tumbling down this slope at break neck pace! Lol. Texas Jack huh...googling...

Yeah I see you guys posting lots about the GEC product....something else to look into. Lots of fans. Thanks for the insight.

Yes...I share the same simplistic wisdom! Nice things are nice...pretty things are pretty.
I'm sure I'll lose interest in them as a carry option, but for now I want some pretty ones!
