Really cheap knife ends up being really great

Oh, I misread the title of this...Thought it said really cheap wife...

I can say some of my less expensive knives have turned out to be great. CS Recon 1, Spyderco Dragonfly 2 ZDP, Esee Izula, Kershaw Blur. Those are the least expensive knives I own besides an old CRKT M16-12z which is about as useful as a poopy flavored lollipop.

I can't say I've ever had a cheap knife turn out better than a much more expensive knife, but I have owned some inexpensive knives that are surprisingly good for what they cost. For instance, when I'm working I carry an inexpensive folder. I'm an atm tech and I have no worries about doing things with a cheap knife I wouldn't do with a more expensive blade. Right now my work knife is a Kershaw Zing. It's a fine little knife for the $25 I paid for it. Is it better or even close to my Bad Monkey (my least expensive off work knife)? Not even close. But it's a good knife for what it is.

In general the more expensive knife will be better in one or more ways. In general the less expensive knife can certainly have more bang for the buck. A Paramilitary2 is not 3 times as good as a Tenacious. A CRK is not 3 times as good as a Paramilitary 2. So the Tenacious is more bang for the buck even though probably no single aspect of it is better than the more expensive knives.

The Tenacious surprised the heck out of me.

YES it did.

so much so I went out of the way and bought a Sprint run with the funky Green G10 scales.

But the made in china bothered me so much, I sanded it off with 320grit.
Now its perfect.
A reformed commie .

This Schrade stockman cost me $15, and it's really impressed me.

Kershaw oso sweet, rat 1 and any sanrenmu/land/enlan/bee. The rat 1 has been a Christmas present for close friends for the past 2 years.

Yea I defiantly wasn't saying all cheap knives are nicer than expensive ones but once in awhile I find one that performs and holds an edge better or the same as a couple of my more expensive ones I usually find that more often with cooking knives tho but that one $8 bowie I have is by far my favorite Bowie compared to sum of my more expensive ones as far as holding and getting back the edge I bought these two cooking knives from a Chinese market total was like $9 and they stay way sharper than my $200 globals I have and actually i have never had to sharpen those two just a good hone and they get used alot i am a chef for a living so my knives get used everyday allday...but your right the globals are better for the ego haha

Another vote for Opinel and I'll throw one to my Kiwi neighbours by mentioning Svord as well. They're both inexpensive and very solid performers.

Plenty of knives are like this. Cheap doesn't equal bad quality. Schrade sharp fingers, buck 110s, opinels, moras, etc. have been wowing people for a good long while. Tons of bang for the buck in those and many more.

Cheap is also a relative term. What about a guy who collects 3000 dollar customs? Let's say one day he winds up with a Busse. It's cheap to him and he would undoubtedly think it was a great bargain knife! Ah, must be nice to have more dollars than sense!

I don't buy knives I'm afraid to use or lose, so all of mine are below $40. I've had my share of junk, but my daily users are just fine. I've rarely been disappointed with one of my choices:)

Came in here to say Mora... bought one because of everyone raving about it on these forums. Immediately fell in love with it.

Also the Sanrenmu 710. It's very well made for such a low price.

I bought a cheap bud k jungle Bowie ($15) back when I was 14, I'm 30 now and still have it. I beat the s**t out of it doing yard work . and in the time I've had it I bought a $300 Tom brown tracker that was garbage and ended up giving away. same could be said for my Becker BK2 $60 and its leaps and bounds better than the tracker
