Very Interesting...
i was stationed in kodiak awhile back, just after the navy base was turned over to the coast guard, heard the turn-over was delayed a few days because one nite the OOD went to check on why the two marine gate guards did not report in. found an empty guard shack with 15 or so .45acp shell casings on the floor, no guards. after daylight found what a brown bear had left of the two marines about 50 yds. away. they found the bear about 100 yds. away where it had finally expired with 15 holes in it's vitals. guard shack was moved back alot closer to base after that.....i can't verify if this was true or not.
i personally however was out to the base rifle range which was out in the woods, had to park then walk in about a half mile. sighted in my .300 winchester magnum, and was leaving about dusk, on walk back noted that all my incoming footprints in the snow/mud were overlayed with these huge bear tracks where it had followed me in. i very carefully made sure i had a full magazine, and VERY carefully walked back to the car & drove back to the BOQ. never did see the bear though. frequently saw browns on the mountain across the bay from where my ship was moored...
