Howdy, my name is Steve. Live in Indianapolis, IN. I have a background in aviation, firearms instruction, law enforcement; jack of all trades, master of none ;)

Have been interesting in knife making for a long time. Back in the mid '80's, I made a couple of patch knives out of a recip saw blade with antler handles.

Always been interested in woodworking, just making stuff for around the house.

Been thinking hard about knife making since earlier this year. Couldn't shake the feeling, so I dove in and built a new workbench for this endeavor. Already had an HF 1x30 and 4x36 from woodworking, so I moved them over to the new bench and straightened things around.

Found a kit knife that I've had for probably 20+ years that I sort of lost interest in at the time. Smoothed out the walnut scales and am working on getting it the way I like it.

Bought a CRKT C/K Dragon cheap and decided to try my hand at a regrind. So far, so good (IMO).

Made some sketches of some smaller blade styles I'd like to make for defensive use. The sharpened edge is on top instead of the bottom. similar to the Clinch Pick design.

My shoulders are pretty torn up, so I won't be doing any forging, just stock removal. Ordered some steel, 1095 and 1080, should be here after the new year.

I'll try to post more pics as soon as they upload to photobucket....

Been reading the FAQ's and sticky's, loads of good info.

for a defensive knife i would sharpen both sides :) easier insertion. hang in there and good luck.

Hi Steve, welcome to the hobby!

I like where you are going with that top knife. Smooth out those handle contours a bit and you should have a winner.

That second picture, the handles look a little bit short and bulbous. If you cut out the shapes into cardboard or wood, you will get a better idea of how it fits in your hand.

I suggest that you look at pictures of other custom knives and emulate things that you like about them, such as handle and blade shapes.

Keep it up.

Thanks, gents, appreciate the feedback.

I sort of cribbed off my ESEE Izula with G10 scales, they're a bit chunky and I like the way they feel. I wear XL gloves, but it feels "right" to me. I will play with the design a bit before I commit anything to steel. I cut out #4 on the bandsaw this morning, and even being 2D it feels pretty decent in my paw.
