What would be your choice for the Ultimate Damascus blade steel??? Additionally, does anyone have any information on the price and availability of Wootz Damascus bar stock? Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I dont't know much of things but maybe it is Rosellis wootz you are talking about. He forges wootz here in Finland. At least he makes some puukkos of it I don't know if he sells any of it.

BTW. Valmet do you know that there is a company that makes tractors, paper machines ect. here and its name is Valmet

I checked out that link you provided, and it appears that 3 people in the USA are Dealers for his products. Looks like I'll be checking with them very soon!

Thanks again!

PS No, I didn't know that Valmet was still in business in some capacity.

I normally associated the name "Valmet" with the FDF's Valmet Rifles that were produced from the 1960's to the late 1980's, at which point Sako bought them out. Their rifles are very collectable here in the USA.

Staba-san has (BF member) one of wootz hunting knives. He may be able to give information. Also James Mattis had one for sale. H. Roselli made a limited edition of 100 numbered hunting and carving puukkos. Some are still available. Many Finns consider 300$ to be a lot for a puukko that looks almost like his normal puukko but costs 5 times more (here). He has recently announced a downgraded version of that steel with only

1,5% carbon.

PS Valmet Aseteollisuus (Valmet Weapon industry or something in english)(was part of Valmet concern) has made quite alot of rifles. Finnish armys assaultrifle was made alternately by Sako and Valmet. During my military service my favorite was Valmet (1975) as it was of older contruction - faster to disassemle and reassemble than newer ones that were issued to me.
I didn't know that Valmet rifles are collectible.

Hi again Tommi
wink.gif
,
I'm more interested in the Highest Quality stuff, which in the case of Roselli, appears to be his 1.7% C stuff. I found the thread back from almost a year ago to date on BFC:
www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000187.html ,
where James poses a query with regard to Wootz. That article is also very informative:
www.tms.org/pubs/journals/JOM/9809/Verhoeven-9809.html , and now I know where someone who E-Mailed me that article found it.

On another Wootz note, does anyone know if Al Pendray will sell small billets of his Wootz Damascus??? I'm trying to get a Special blade ground for me out of Really High Quality Wootz like Al Pendray's stock. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

PS Tommi, my favorite Valmet is the M62 with the Milled receiver.

Alfred Pendray from Florida is the only one that I know of that has successfully made wootz consistantly. He gave a class at the Bateson Bladesmith Symposium about 1 1/2 years ago. It was truly amazing stuff. It was also complicated enough that I will leave the making of it to someone that is dedicated to the process.
