Really want to pay it forward??? Here's a challenge

You just don't get it fetzer do you!
It's a gift to who ever wants it. Just didn't want someone who doesn't have use for it to grab it just because it was free.

I might be confused but didn't the OP indicate they would start?

"Of course, the way it works is simple: I'll start it. I'll offer an item, FREE, to someone who wants it, the only caveat being they must continue it by doing the same. It'll be a meaningful item of mine. You gotta do the same."

Maybe some clarification would be appropriate? If not and it is open to some interpretation I agree with Jim above, let the giving begin! I have a knife I would very much like to offer, and I really like this concept, but would like to ensure I adhere to the original intent. Just my .02

I'm in on this, with the wealth of info I've received form BF, I'd love to give back

Hold your horses! lol

The OP said he would start it out. We may also face another issue with gifts that are so specific and require the receiver to have certain things. If someone does, great! But what do we do if no one bites? Some Q's to consider...

- Do we allow people to join for a given period of time, then close it off and start the process?

- Is it a first 'I'll take it' kind of thing or is there some kind of order as to who gets dibs?

- If a person offers something and no one is interested, are they done or are they required to offer something else?

and x2 on these questions

Maybe the best way to start this is with someone that has a NEED for something. A need will cause someone who has what they need to pay it forward. It might not roll in a consecutive manner from giver to receiver and forward as another giver but the concept should take off nonetheless. So paying it forward can be accomplished by those getting their needs meet by those that have and those that receive can eventually give back when they can. Hope that makes sense...

I like this idea, my friends and I do this sort of thing. I'd like to do it with someone else too. I'm in.

I'm pretty sure he was thinking of paying forward knives that have meaning to us. The person that it is given to is the first person that accepts the condition of giving a gift to the next person in the same manner. You guys are making it more difficult than need be.

OP, I will take you up on this and ensure I continue it in whatever way you have in mind. PM me if that is agreeable. Also, thanks for this interesting idea; I already have my own item in mind.

Sorry if I jumped the gun.I though Jim H was referring to a post I had made a few hours earlier in the. "5000 B-day giveaway" where I said something about it being a pay it forward giveaway.
I don't think it should be like a chain letter where if you receive something you have to give something back right away to keep it going.
If it was meant to be only one item at a time, then I apologize I did not understand it correctly.
As far as rules go they will need to be adjusted depending on the item being offered.
To me the true meaning of a gift is to give something to someone in need and expect nothing but good will in return

I'm a little cloudy on how this will work specifically (other than providing someone with something of value to myself and possibly provide them with the meaningful back story) BUT either way I am in and will be back later to check on progress! Cool!

What in the world are you talking about? The guy wants to pass something he values and that has meaning to him on, and expects the next person to do the same, and the next etc etc. Hopefully in an unbroken chain. He wants the next person to follow suit.

I have to say, your hijacking of the thread and attempt to impose your own rules on it seems a little disrespectful. Just an opinion.

This worked pretty well on my PA- specific firearm owners forum, but was much simpler there due to having fewer active members. The best part was the pay-it-forward threads cropped up in rapid succession during past winters buying frenzy/scare/craze/whatever. Really helped people with some warm and fuzzies :)

Over there we made one thread per person (giver) and super-interested people would PM with an "oh I'd love to have that" etc.

Psyop is the winner of my jig.

Sorry some of you think I hijacked the thread. I was just trying to do something nice for someone.

Cool thread. so how exactly is this going to work. People just post something they would like to pass on and somebody who could use it claims it?

I'm in, and I already know what I will give.
I have developed a jig for cutting bevels that really helps someone starting out and has trouble getting straight even bevels.
The kit consists of three pieces, 1, a magnetic base that you stick the blade on. 2, a 18" aluminum work rest that the magnetic base wont stick to. and 3, an aluminum platen so the magnets wont pull the blade off course . As an added bonus each piece transfers heat from the blade.

Here are my Rules for winning this $159.00 kit.

1 You must be new to knife making.

2 You must already have a 2 X 72" knife grinder that has a tool arm like or similar to a KMG grinder.

3 Be able to drill and tap the mounting holes for the work rest and platen, as no two are the same. And getting a square fit is very important.

4 Use it and post feed back. Good or bad I just want to see if you like it or not.

5 be willing to wait a week or two. I broke a gear in my milling machine and parts are ordered

6 First one who wants it and can answer yes to rules 1 through 5 and sends me an email saying so along with a photo of your grinder and contact information gets it.
jimmcguinn@live.com

I sent Jim an email with all of the questions answered and a few of my own. He was being very generous. I guess I am derailing the thread as well. Either way thanks a bunch Jim.

As soon as you all figure out how this works I will be happy to pay something forward.

Sorry some of you think I hijacked the thread. I was just trying to do something nice for someone.

Before I sound like a total dick let me just say that I appreciate you wanting to give something away looking for nothing in return.

Now the dick part.

Yes you've officially hijacked this thread! If you read the OP's initial post it was very clear that at this stage he was attempting to assemble a group of people willing to give this a shot. It was also very clear that HE would start it - probably after explaining the details to us. If you just wanted to be kind and give something away you certainly could've started your own thread. The idea behind this is a little bigger than just jumping in and giving something away.

No hard feelings.

Your criticism is understood and excepted. Sometimes I jump in and do things without thinking them through.

I have sent jimh a PM about the matter.

I will try to do better in the future

K Folks, here we go! Gonna start a new thread with the 'rules' if you will for this opportunity to do a little feel good stuff. Mods, you can feel free to close this thread to eliminate confusion. But I'll start with a little stash of goodies. I hope someone likes them and wants to pony up something of their own. BTW, this is open to everyone on BF. I just am counting on good people to keep it going and not just get. We'll all see!
