Really you have got to be kidding me.

I don't really think it's that weird. To this day people still call adjustable pliers "Channel Locks" and an adjustable wrench a "Crescent Wrench." Calling a Gerber branded pliers based multi tool a "Leatherman" is sort of like this.

Wrong? Yes.

But understandable.
+1 I am guilty of this too.

I've overheard people calling a Gerber multitool a Leatherman. So many brands get their name associated with the item to the point where people will say Q-tip, Vaseline, Bandaid, Kleenex, Listerine, etc. instead of the item's real name. I think most people do this unconsciously. Best thing you can do is steer people over to the real Leathermans :)

I'm guilty of almost all of those things - except for calling a Gerber a Leatherman. That's pushing the envelope wayyyyyyyy to far.

BTW, where I grew up, all sodas were Cokes. The traditional exchange went something like this:
A: Wanna Coke?
B: Yup
A: What kind?
B: 7-Up

A guy I once worked with hit the same situation travelling through Arkansas. He stopped at a KFC and ordered some food. Girl at the counter asked him if he wanted a Coke with his meal. He said yes. She asked him what kind. He said Coke. She said yes, but what kind? He replied, a Coke. She said yes, I know that, but what kind? He eventually figured out the correct answer, which was Coca Cola. Two people separated by a common language. Gotta love it.

I'm more surprised that someone was actually impressed with gerber multitools.. :D

Once upon a time, they were pretty good. Back in the late 90s, there was a lively rivalry around here between Leatherman and Gerber enthusiasts. Although I was on the Leatherman side of things, I always respected Gerber. I understand things have changed, but I haven't :D .

I came across a posting on one of the travel site boards where a woman (I am assumeing female by her name) refered to her packing gear for a trip, including her "Leatherperson".........................

I saw a couple at Costco examining a display of the Leatherman Charge.

He said, “Looks interesting.”

She, unimpressed, “Why buy it? It’s only for working with leather.”

"Leatherperson" makes me smile. :)

I didn't realize until a couple of weeks ago that "Leatherman" was actually the founder's last name. When I first became acquainted with the tools, I figured they were named because of the leather sheaths commonly used. I thought the name was a little too tied to the sheaths, I guess. But I didn't think about it too much either way, really.
