My parents won’t let me get the Kershaw Link or the Blur, because they said it’s “to big for every day carry”. I tried to talk them into it, but they said NO. How do I get them to say yes? 4.5 inches closed isn’t that big... :(

You live in their house respect what they say. Save the money and get something much nicer later when you are able.

Man your parents are lame...be a kid and live a little. Buy it and don't tell them...simple

Young me would do this for sure. However, I did buy a zippo when I was 13 and almost burned the house down. The wrath that store felt from my mother was no joke. They had a sign out after her visit saying no one under 18 from then on.

Looking back on it, I'd do it again o_O

But man I would not want be the vendor that sells to this kid under false pretense, and have some pissed off parents to deal with, even if it was a legal sale.

To OP PheonixKingZ PheonixKingZ seriously great info already, id just add that i know you're set on an assisted blade, i think they suck. I'd either go manual or automatic, but assisted never has worked well with my hands. My fingers always end up in front of the blade somehow.

The Link you were looking at is the only assisted i have and like as you just have the flipper tab and no thumb stud.

I hope the wrath you caught was at least equal if not greater than what the store felt.

This is just too funny (to me)!

Just take your parents to your local knife shop (or outdoor store that sells knives) and show them what a really BIG folder looks like.

The Link and Blur (which I both own) to me are definitely on the small size and one reason (among others) that I don't carry them is because I think that they are too small. My preferrred carry size is 3 5/8-4" and the Link/Blur are only 3.25-3.4" long.

At least your parents are "cool" w/you carrying "a knife" to begin with. I could see a lot of parents objecting to a 15 yr old boy carrying one at the outset, especially if it's illegal (which is probably is) to carry it to school w/you.

Anyway, good luck convincing your parents that the Link and Blur aren't THAT big after all. ;)

BTW, if you are successful in doing this AND want to "upgrade" you choice of an EDC Kershaw blade, I recommend that you try to get the Shallot 1840.

It's been long discontinued but it was/still is my favorite Kershaw based on looks/feel out of the roughly 90+ Kershaws that I own.

The all black PE Shallot was the 1st Kershaw that I ever bought. I like it so much that I now own 8 variations of it (silver & black w/all blade variations and some steel variations as well) but it has a 3.5" blade which is longer than both the Link & Blur and will cost you a min of $100 in the 2ndary market for one in good shape w/the box but it's worth it IMO.

Just keep it in mind if you can't buy one now. Good luck!

I will talk to both of them tonight. If I can get the Link, I will do so. If not (and they agree on me getting the Link) I will get the Link Carbon Fiber. I hear it’s only 3oz? That’s super light...

Anyway, Kershaw seems like really good knives, and I need to learn how to care for them properly.

Speaking of that, what is a decent hand-held sharpener? I don’t think I’m ready for a wet stone yet...

Compared to my M-Tech knife, it’s small. I want a decent sized one because I spend a lot of time outside.

The one you mentioned looks cool, but I have my mind set on the Blur, Link, or Leek. ;)

Are Spyderco Knives good quality? I have seen those in a few threads around here, they look really good.

Any small model suggestions? (No tanto, or serrations - spring assisted, regular blade. ;))
You won’t get the spring assisted option, but personally I don’t like assisted knives. In my LIMITED experience they’re more sensitive to lint and need inspected more often. Look at the Efficient, I don’t own one, but in ten years of buying them I haven’t had a bad spyderco.

Oh, didn’t realize they weren’t spring assisted. :/

Right now, people have only given me Kershaw options, and some other.

I am looking for:

A relatively small knife, spring assisted, good blade, good handle, plain blade. Any brand suggestions? My budget is around $70.

You’re on the right path with Kershaw, have you looked at the Cryo? It’s a popular model and priced right

I have seen that, but not really impressed...

I could be looking around on BladeHQ.com or Amazon, but I don’t know how to pick out a quality knife. Before I came to BF, I got the cheapest and “coolest” looking knife. I now know, that is not right.

Anyone else have any good models/brands?

Young grasshopper, you are on the right path. The longer you hang out here, the more you will learn, and the more you will know what "quality" is and how to recognize it. When you can snatch the pebble from my hand.... LOL...probably too young for the reference:D

Anyway, given your budget constraints, I would suggest also looking at Cold Steel's offerings, as they offer pretty good bang for the buck, but not many AO.

I suggest the kershaw dividend in m390, it’s right near your $70 limit and I don’t think u can do much better for the money. M390 is some great steel, specially for $70.

I got my first high and knife when I was 15 also :) and by 17 I had spent almost 2000$ on knives.
