My friends know I carry a go bag, and don't have an issue with it. If they did, I would just drive myself. I usually like to drive myself anyway...I am a control freak and don't like to feel "trapped" anywhere.
I guess this comes with feeling prepared. While my bag has a good bit of gear in it, my truck has lots of "extras" in it as well.
 
Going back to college has got me carrying a backpack all the time. I don't carry a lot of stuff, but I keep a ferro rod and a jug of water. Usually I try to keep my back pack with me at all times and I switch off form carrying it up front in the car or putting it in the trunk of my car. I try to be cautious of getting ripped off here in the city, so I try to make myself look the same when i leave my condo by shaving, wearing jeans, and carrying a pack whether its just a quick ride to the store or longer. Weird eh?

Car = trunk. Plenty of room to stow a backpack. What's the problem?
 
Depends, If you're driving through death valley then it's probably a must.

If you're going on well traveled roads in populated areas then it's excessive, if you can't go ONE place without a backpack you have serious problems that may need medical attention :p.
 
Fortunately we live in a world where we always know when an emergency will happen ahead of time........ :)

I'm not a control freak, but if I can, I would pack along my 72-hour bag. I understand where suture is coming from, but I've learned to live with a little hassle in order to be prepared and will fly with my pistol and kit (gun friendly states and check in luggage); my check in is free, so it's no skin minus time.

It would also be prudent to have a minimum kit (like Pit suggested) that you're comfortable with and can be carried unobtrusively...

If they are your friends then they shouldn't even ask. If I was going away for the day with buddies and they each tossed a bag in my truck I'd just go about my business figuring its stuff they want with them. I mean hell they are my buddies, if they tried to load up the back of my expedition with gear I might say something but even then if they really wanted it and I had room, what are friends for.
 
As much as I doubt you'd need it, that isn't the point.
Most people don't know what will happen to them by the end of the day,
that's what makes emergencies. If they knew the danger they'd prepare or
not go into danger.
Also, if there is room, any "friend" who wouldn't let you throw your
bag in the trunk or empty seat, isn't much of a friend.
Just my $.02
