Reasons to keep quiet about preparations

I think one of the reasons we all come here is somewhere in the back of our minds we believe a collapse is a real possibility, maybe even inevitible. If you look back at world controlling empires, none have lasted and none are permanent. The Roman Empire was massive and powerful, yet all that remains are ruins that remind us how powerful they were, and how quickly and hard they fell. We would be foolish to believe any governing body will always be here. We realize that at anytime we could have to use our skills to keep us alive. Why else would we practice primitive skills at all? We have grocery stores and bic lighters, running water and electricity, and law and order. We here realize that at any time that could and may disappear, leaving us to fend for ourselves. Preparedness is a mindset few can maintain. We are often looked at as silly or paranoid, yet we have TV shows like Best Defense and Personal Defense, Man Vs. Wild and Survivorman, that have become very popular at teaching and explaining how to survive everything from a snowstorm to a global meltdown.

My OP was not meant to be political, but to be an eye opener. The only people who are watching out for us is, well, us. The old saying "looking out for number one" is in fact true. I apologize for any politics, I just wanted to make you aware that in a crisis, there may be no friends, only those who want what you have and will use any means to get it. To me, that's another view of preparedness, to prepare a way to hold on to what you have when the SHTF and you need it...Jim

Concern and planning is one thing, but being prepared to take on the US military, or even a National Guard unit, is an entirely different animal. Truth of the matter is that, if the proverbial S hits the proverbial F, few individuals are going to have the resources or the desire to engage a prolonged fight with the U.S. government.

I don't remember the exact % but I remember a poll of US troops that were asked if they would follow orders like these and if they would shoot to kill US citizens and almost all said they would refuse to follow such orders. Some even went as far as stating they would relieve their superiors of their command by any means necessary, aka FRAG, before murdering US citizens. Most said they thought about what would happen to their own families. Freedom is too ingrained in our society's mindset about how far we will let big bro go before crossing the line. I don't worry about these things.

Even during Katrina, when New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Police Superintendent P. Eddie Compass were screaming for (and getting) confiscation of guns, some units absolutely refused to participate.

We may very well face a scenario where society will break down, but it's more likely to be in the form of an epidemic than some political event. Those who are well prepared will be able to hunker down in their homes and fend for themselves. Those who are not will have to mix with the populous and risk infection. Some areas may experience unrest and people may have to bug out. And here again, the well prepared will be better off.

We can also go through our entire lives with no such event taking place. But all it takes is one breakdown in the middle of nowhere for all the skills and preparation to be worth the time and effort. And if not even one single mishap happens during your entire life, the peace of mind is worth this.

Pulling any of the listed things off would be a logistical nightmare. Ain't gonna happen and I am as paranoid as the people watching me...

I feel that the well prepared (in the material sense) will be singled out in short time. Epidemics, disasters, civil unrest WILL involve the goverment and the military, whether it's a quarantine, evacuation, executive order... whatever... those riding high will be brought down. You are fooling yourself to think you will be allowed to haul around a 50lb BOB as you are corralled to temporary emergency shelters and transport vehicles.

Hey Rick, you seem very level-headed about the situation. Personally, if (and let's hope to god it never happens) you find your family and yourself being corralled by government agents to temporary emergency camps, would you go along with it or would you be prepared to take a stand?

I would only be concerned about staying with my family... that's what matters most. We can deal with it if we are together. If they tried to separate us (depending on the reasons, of course) I would fight till the end. My number one priority is doing everything I can to protect my wife and kids.

I would check the validity of your sources, most of these go against what the U.S. stands for.

Executive Order #11000: Seizure of all American people for work forces under federal supervision including the splitting of families if the government finds it necessary.

This one above all, gave me a shudder.Would we be paid,or would it just be slavery?

There is a reason we have a political forum for topics like this. At least we know where to look to moderate them. Slipping under the radar like this is not right.

Wilderness skills vs. political skills, not a valid comparison. This thread is closed.
