I've seen some rebar knives before. Around here it's handles for welding up billets :D

Raymond Richards used to make some knives out of rebar years ago,I have used it in Damascus (as layers not just handles) and made hawks out of it...

It has to be 60 grade rebar to make a knife, and then you will still need to check it after heat treat just to make sure you get a survacable edge. Not really the best to just go haywire with, but something to play with if you want to mess around with your heat treat.

ive forged a couple. since you dont know what you get, ht is iffy. the edge was useable but not great. the guy that taught me said rebar is basically 5160 bottom pourings, but i dont know for sure.

Cheeesel pickup some that's over here. It's not old and at his firm they called it Deweydag (sp??). It is basically round with flat sides. We have made knives from it and it holds a good edge. We did it up like 1084. He was told that they use it in bridge applications.

That's some for you heavy hitters!
Mete that ol' stuff will make a nice souveneir knife :)

Joe , I know a guy over in Wallkill who has 1" rebar in his house. Over engineering but he lived near a big construction site and scrounged extra rebar !!

Round, 1941

What size is it? I wouldn't mind messing with some if its 5/8 to 1". I've got some square stuff that Wayne Goddard had given me. I checked the spark on a couple pieces and one sure looked like it had more carbon than the other. The old stuff you can get I bet is made in the US and its pretty clean. Here's one out of 60 grade rebar I made the second or third year I was making when everything was mirror polished: http://www.bladegallery.com/shopexd.asp?id=2750&websess=36581441026459

deweydag is a good name for something that has no name:D
"hey kid go grab me that deweydag" when you get to the pile just grab the odd stuff ;)
