At Jerry's suggestion, I bought a bottle of the run-of-the-mill Rebel Yell bourbon last month. See: http://www.rebelyellwhiskey.com/

It was relatively cheap, price-wise.

Anyway, I finished a bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle 12 Year "Lot B" last night, so had the opportunity to open up something new. The Rebel Yell got the nod.

First of all, this bourbon is not bad. Not bad at all. It has no negative smells nor tastes. The only thing I can say is that it lacks some character and depth, but at its price point, it is arguably quite good. It is also relatively smooth.

I'd rather enjoy something by Buffalo Trace or ORVW, but that's at a higher price point. At this lower price point, it's hard to go wrong. If you enjoy bourbon, take Jerry's suggestion, and give Rebel Yell a whirl.

Ken, I'm going to trust your judgement and give this a try next time I'm at the bottle shop. I really like the ORVW Spec. Res. Lot "B", so if you can muster that favorable of a review of a cheaper bourbon after that, it can't be all bad.

We used to drink Rebel Yell and Ginger Ale in college.

I hope this information doesn't get me kicked off the sub-forum.

:)

Lunde, a while back Jerry mentioned Rebel Yell to me and I got a bottle. I like it, especially for the price ratio. Saying that I need to hit the store this friday for another bottle. Kinda like a woman at the bar.never mind, won't go there and get in trouble!

good stuff!
there are better whiskeys out there, but I can't afford to drink near as much of them at a sitting -- and it doesn't hurt me to share with folks who leave a glass half full when they leave.

I'm not a big fan of the wheat based Bourbons like Rebal Yell and Maker's Mark, but I would argue that RY is at least as good a MM and a good deal cheaper.

You want the best "economical" bourbon out there, bust open a bottle of Wild Turkey 101. The Kickin' Chicken is where it's at! Awsome in all respects and easily found.

GlassJax, you wrote:

I agree.

Speaking of Wild Turkey 101, when I was in South Dakota last month, I spotted a 750mL "travel pack," and snagged two. Imagine a bottle of Wild Turkey, but shaped such that it travels better. I have not seen it available anywhere else.

Hi Lunde,

I don’t usually drink bourbon. My preferred hard liquor is Tennessee whiskey usually Jack Daniel’s. How do the tastes compare?

Man, all this talk about great drinks. I haven't had good hard alcohol in a long time. It's been mostly beer recently. Next weekend I definitely need to go out and get me some drink

Bicentennial Man?

Make that Trycentrnnial Man! If it's got "proof" he'll try it :D

Now it's time for me to finish off this dram of The Glenlivet 12 and head to bed. :)

Oink, Oink, Snort, Snort and all that. :D

You know, when one wakes up and enjoys some bourbon (or scotch) along with breakfast, it's one of those "two birds with one stone" sort of things: it is scientifically-proven to help you live longer, and it gives you something to look forward to each day.

What could be better?

Ain't that right, Skunk? ;)
