As many know from reading my posts I'm a big fan of my vic rucksack for most things... I've been thinking lately that I'd like to get a larger fixed blade to keep in my pack for heavy work and backup. I'm thinking something with a blade between 6-8 inches, and under 100 bucks (I'm a civil servant and thusly am poor) So any thoughts? The team would also be coupled with a saw, axe, or both depending on the season and location...Well Thanks for looking.

Go cheap but put some money into some kydex and a convex edge. Very light and won't make you poor.

BTD. THanks I have a few machetes, but I'd like something a little smaller, with a thicker stock..

John,
a guy with your build could really like the RD7...the handle was almost to small for my hands..but it had a good grab to it, and the blade is great..they are very good knives for the money. I also like the RAT 7 and Becker BK7

There is some talk over at Bark River of getting together an order to rework some machetes. According to what I gathered everyone will buy the same type and model and send them in to Mike. He will strip off the old handles, heat treat and put a convex edge on them. Then he will install a handle of choice.

:D

I have been seriously thinking of joining in. I have one BRK&T Golok and I put in a pre-order for another one for my son so I don't know if I will do it or not. Depends on cost I guess.

For an excellent BIG knife check out the Fallkniven Wilderness Knife. They are convex laminated VG-10 and are tough knives. The one I got was so sharp out of the box it cut paper like it pulling itself into the cut. I could take 2mm cuts off the top of a catalog page that would roll up as I cut them. Actually the sharpest factory knife I have ever bought.

For probably less than that, David Farmer can make you a custom Camp Knife like the one on his home page.
He often lists knives for sale here but as his 'fame' is growing, he is getting busier and busier.

Give him a holler

It might be a little long for you, but I really like my KaBar heavy bowie. I'm normally not too enthralled with their blades, but this has been a heck of a blade. I also feel like that length of blade makes for both a good chopper and general camp knife ,whereas something in the ~7" length might be slightly easier to work with but will be much less good at chopping.

If something shorter does seem more up your alley, I too would suggest waiting on the RC6, they ought to hit a home run with that one.

Gerber lmf asek II its a damn fine knife for the money. Did fairly well on knifetests. Cant really expect too much for for 89.99.

for your prices and needs I'd also say get a Ranger. if you could make Blade Show, you'd be able to sample many of Justin's creations, but if not he will always work with you and get you want you want bro,
great customer service.

I just bought a Blackjack Grunt new for 20.00. It's a heck of a knife for the money. As others have said Kabar is also about as much knife for the money as you will find. I have the Marine knife and Camp Knife.

In that price range I like the Ranger RD7 or 5 Blackjack Grunts. I can't say enough about the new Grunts in terms of price versus performance. Just pay 20$ shipped from smokey mountain knifeworks and then buy a Spec Ops sheath which happens to fit it perfectly and you have a great knife that will take a major beating.
