I got here by way of rec.knives a couple of months ago. Steve had been posting his stories for a while and I, knowing nothing at all about either Steve or Sal, wondered at first about what was going on. I try to keep my mind open (just not so open my brains fall out) so I didn't completely dismiss Steve's claims immediately, even though he set off several of my standard crackpot alarms.
In the meantime, I have been spending some time here and have continued to read rec.knives also. I think Sal has little to fear for his reputation. Steve has shown himself to be full of hate not only for Sal, but for just about everyone and everything else, while Sal has shown himself to be a gentleman with a good word for everyone.
I know that there is some small chance that my assessment could be wrong. The best con-men always come across as nice guys. But when you're looking at a pair of guys and one of them has a real obsession, little or nothing to say about the ostensible topic of the newsgroup, is ranting about "Lutherans" and contrasting them with "Christians", refers to Joel Rosenberg as having a "good Christian name" and is generally ranting about everyone from Sal to the entire state government of Colorado; while the other guy (Sal) is a real participant in BF, gives away a real honey of a rare knife for a contribution to the Denver Children's Hospital and never has anything but good to say about his competitors, it's pretty clear which way to bet about who is the lunatic and who is the good guy. I don't expect to lose a lot of sleep wondering if I've read the two of them right. And from my reading of rec.knives, I don't think many other people have much problem with that either.
