Hey all,

This is my first post on BF, and it is in the Axe section!

After doing a lot of research for a cheap, light camp Axe, I have decided on a Kershaw 1018.

What I am intrested now is keeping the edge on my axe! If anyone could tell me about good sharpening stones and maybe even how to sharpen (I am a newbie at it.) that would be awesome. Thanks a lot for your time! :)

Well, I typically use my die grinder on my axe and hatchet heads as well as my machete's. Although I could probably get a lot better edge with my dual grit carborundum, would just take a lot longer... They teach you in scouts to use a file.

But I'm no axe expert, so lets see what some others have to say.

Gerber makes a great puck for about $7 as does Lansky. Both are great for axes and hawks, they're handy enough to toss into your pack and have in the field.

Excellent. Small and cheap are two biggest factors for me. How much does that gerber one weigh? Also, would I need to use oil with these stones?

They both literally weigh ounces and we have a honing oil that we recommend with them.

The Gerber 2 1/2" diameter. 120 grit Alumina+ Carborundum stone is designed for heavy duty sharpening of tools, axes, lawnmower blades and shovels. Easy grip cap reduces slippage.

The Lansky 3" diameter dual grit carbide sharpening stone measures 1" thick. Ideal for lawn mower blades, machetes, garden tools, etc.
