More than enough times in the past I've had to deal with the ridiculous questions of others. I'm sick of it. I figured if i get a more people friendly knife, they'll maybe ease up a bit on the jackass comments. You never see people with an old lock back knife being scolded for carrying a knife with them, at least i don't(stories are welcome, i love listening to them). so what would you guys recommend? i was looking at the buck 112 or something like that. it could even be a modern style folder, just something that wont make people freak out and think that I'm a cereal killer

I'd say a SAK, or an old fashioned slipjoint would be accepted by most.

If you like a modern one handed opener, people seem to not be too frightened by a little Kershaw rainbow coated chive.... they just think it's cute or pretty.

Actually, I think it is still okay to kill cereal. I tend to drown mine in milk and then masticate it.:)

As far as knives go, you might want to try a traditional style.
I just got one of these:Case sodbuster

and I've got a Queen Stockman on order.

Here are a couple others I like.

In all honesty, I don't think you'll ever get a truly "people-friendly knife." The popular culture has demonized knives as weapons and those who have them as criminals. Political correctness has made this trend much worse. It is to be expected that most people, at first, will fear a knife but those with common sense will understand that it's a tool when you take the time to explain it to them.

In my own experience, the Spyderco Ladybug is the only knife that gets chuckles (from guys) and compliments (from women). It's small but holds a very sharp edge and is good for light EDC chores.

My UKPK, on the other hand, is widely considered a "weapon." It doesn't matter that it is a slip joint or has a bright, orange handle. People see the sharp point and sleek blade and feel threatened. Like I've said, most understand why I carry it but not everyone does. You just have to shrug off that ignorance. As long as you follow your local laws you have nothing to worry about.

Hi,

Yeah you want people friendly get a SAK. Slippies go over well too. A nice Case medium Stockman in chestnut bone with CV blades is always in good taste. Kind of reminds people of their dad or grandfather. So come over to the darkside.:D

But black coated, tanto pointed, saw backed, false edged, switch-bladed, butterflied, 8" fixed blades are gonna kill you in your sleep every time.

Keep'em small and simple. That way people won't fuss.

Where I live many knives are illegal - push daggers, balisongs, switchblades and a bunch of others. But no one has a problem with my SAK or LM Wave. A pocket multitool is much friendlier than a 'dangerous' knife!

My Victorinox Cybertool has a big and a small knife and I have never had a problem with other people about it, despite it being my EDC for almost a decade.

A buck 110 or 112 shouldnt get to many looks. I've taken my 110 out in the office infront of others or in a boardroom - never goes over real well but at it would be a lot worst if I pulled out a knife without the "classic" look.

The most "sheeple" friendly knife I own is the newest one. An Emerson Mini A100. Fantastic little EDC or backup. Great warranty, good steel and feels super good in the hand. I took the clip off and carry like a true pocket knife.

a spiderco cricket is a good little knife..holds a good edge and is "cute" hard to sharpen though given the blade shape

Gotta go with the SAK, The one decent thing that McGiver did for us.

You won't scare anybody with a Swiss Army Knife.

It's happened to me before.

Generally though a SAK or Leatherman is a safe bet, or small Slipjoints, no one reasonable has had a problem with my Case trappers yet but there are always unreasonable people out there.

if dont wanna spend too much, maybe look into opinel knives. you can find them for around 8 bucks

Hide in plain sight.

I keep a Spyderco Tasman Salt with yellow FRN scales in my office for chores. Something about the bright safety yellow handle that makes it too obvious for anyone to be scared by it.

I get requests by the office ladies to "borrow that yellow knife of yours" whenever anyone needs to open a box.

Just the other day I had my first complaint when I took out my knife to cut down a water heater box. The husband and wife were both saying, "OH BE CAREFUL, That knife looks so dangerous". Never mind the fact that I was just soldiering copper with a 2000˚ torch 2" from wood in their house.

Give me a break. It was a Spyderco Tenacious. I'm carrying the knife I want, any day I want. Who knows what might happen to me, I might get in a fight for my life with badger in a crawl space. :D
