reccomendation for a people friendly knife?

SAK is the safest bet. Sodbuster, Jr. is acceptable most of the time, but a full size Sodbuster much less so. The perceived threat seems to be much less when the knife is on a key ring or is so pretty it's seen as male jewelry. If you can find one with a decent blade, the small all stainless lockbacks rarely attract unwelcone attention. Light colors are better than dark.

This is all about emotional reactions at a subconcious level. Reason has very little to do with it.

Red Swiss Army knife or Case XX peanut. Or about anything you want but keep it to yourself.

I carry a Benchmade Mini RSK Mk1 folding knife as my "socially acceptable" blade. I have the breast cancer awareness model with the pink FRN handles; I find that the charitable cause of the knife is a good excuse for its purchase, carry, and use. It has a relatively small blade, an ergonomic handle, and the resilient Axis lock, so I find that it is a solid knife that can be relatively politically correct in comparison to any other knives that could hope to be nearly as versatile or well-designed.

I also carry a Case Medium Stockman in CV or a Victorinox Gardener when trying to keep my edged tools low-key.

In addition to the SAK I would say some samller folders such as the Fallkniven U2 would'nt cause too much ruckus.

It seems that traditional slipjoints are the most people friendly. Nobody ever worries about a Case peanut unless your in an airport

An A.G. Russell Ultimate Pen won't scare anyone. Not only is the blade a mere 1-1/2 inches, with a closed length of 2 inches, but they also come in very nice handle scales, such as mother of pearl and abalone. I used to own the MOP version, and when it first arrived, I couldn't help but laugh at it. The thing was simply adorable, packed in a super tiny leather sleeve.

I think that if people think the knife you carry is crazy looking F@#K em. If I could I would carry a f@#kin rambo knife all the time. Who cares, carry what you like, after all it's your knife. Nuff said.

and think that I'm a cereal killer

Yeah, you wouldnt want that would you?;)

As suggested before, the SAK is pretty sheeple friendely. And the humble Opinel. In a higher price class: people don't seem to be afraid of my Mnandis or my William Henry forlders.

Kind regards,

Jos

most small/medium slipjoints (a peanut, medium stockman, etc) look like grandpa's pocket knife to non-knife carriers. And as mentioned a SAK is something a boy scout would have not a murder weapon to all but the most unreasonable.

even in china there are victorinox shops next to the Rolex dealers.

My solution is to carry more than one knife. Left Front pocket ALWAYS has a tiny SAK classic, and usually a Spyderco Ladybug, even when wearing dress pants. I'll keep a larger knife in my right pocket or in the watch pocket, and often my Spyderco Caly3 tucked in my waistband, it hides pretty deep with the wire clip, plus I'm quite overweight, so my fat hides it :)

If I need to cut a piece of tape in the company "kitchen" or somewhere with other sheeple around, the SAK works great, and I'm happy knowing I have larger blade available if I need it. Yeah, I get ribbed by my family for always carrying so many knives, so I impress my nephews at family get-togethers by carrying even more :) I had 10 knives on me at our Thanksgiving get-together, besides a few more in a bag and my sharpmaker to sharpen my sister's kitchen knives.

Spyderco Kopa.

Spyderco's Lava, bug, Dragonfly,Chicago,Cat,Cricket and probably a few others they make. Boker Subcom series. If you want to go higher end Yuna EQ,CRK Mnandi and William Henrys would work like it was said before.

How much do you want to spend?

A SAK, without a doubt. It's world-wide-known and has a reputation of being for "handymen", so it won't offend the great majority of blade-ignorant people out there.

The CRKT Tuition is quite non-threatening. It's much smaller than it appears in these picures:

Lots of great ideas in this thread already.

My vote goes to a Swiss army Classic. If you are around really sensitive people, it's so small there is no reason not to carry it, plus it has scissors, toothpick, tweezers. Great for cleaning and cutting nails and nose hairs while waiting for customers to get home or whatever.

I usually carry a classic on the keys, a small slipjoint (or large :D) in pocket and a clipped folder for easy access. The spyderco wire clipped knives are very low profile.

Ian, unless you want to carry one of the new kids vicrtorinox knives, with a blunt tip, and not much of an edge, or better yet one of the victorinox plastic swiss army knives, they are going to find something wrong with most everything you can think of. They may even find something wrong with those too!

Now, you could try an ag russell pen knife, or a victorinox cadet, those are pretty unobtrusive.

Unfortunately some people can be real "hypochondriacs". I know many people like this over the years, from living in different places. The south is much more forgiving, than people in the north. Most ural areas, no matter where they are, like my grandfathers old Illinois farm in the 70's, places like that, knives are tools. People think no differently than that. Just like kids back then (70's) could take their rifles to school during deer season, leave them in the lockers, go to deer camp after school was over.

We carried our pocket knives to school, wherever we went. I was given my first knife at the age of four. No thought was ever given to fear. People tend to watch too many movies these days, and do not live in reality much. They seem to breed fear in the newspapers, internet, etc.

There's allot of factors out there that play into this.

I imagine a buck 110, or 112, will still upset some people.

If I were you, I would not worry about pleasing others, just use good wisdom when you carry different knives in different places. And remember, there are those that will find something wrong with anything. Just use good judgement. And enjoy your knives!

I grew up in a differen time, and it is past. We all have to adjust somewhat, but it doesnt mean we have to give up what we enjoy.

try the ag russeell pen knife, or victorinox cadet. if that offends people? There's not much you can do at that point!

A lot of good suggestions here already. Carry what you are comfortable with and don't make a big show of opening or closing. Most of the traditional knives will qualify. Then again some folks are going to be upset by anything so don't worry about them.

I tend to work the other way. One knife I carry is "fancy"; red coral scales, gold inlaid and engraved. If it gets a view the common reaction (so far) is, " That's pretty.", or something along that line.

Yes, it is. It's also sharp as all get out.

SAK or slipjoint that this 3" or less. I carry a Queen Serpentine Jack or a Case MiniCopper head usually, or sometimes a Cadet Alox. No one in the office ever looks twice.

But always carry a back-up in case of zombie attacks.....:D
