That is a poncho/tarp raft. The students in the advanced made a great raft. Unfortunately, the water where we were able to test it was down a hill and it was beaten up along the way. I was still able to ride it about 200 yards down the river before it was stuck on some rocks. These types of rafts are best used on flat water.

That spider is disgusting! It definetely would have met the business end of my RatManDu!

Excellent, I always like your course pics. The alder though... Hate 'em!

Kevin,

Thanks for the photos. Two questions:

What's going on with the truck hooked up to the yellow stakes?

Are you going to be at the UPMI course and campin? I hope to get there again and hope you'll make it this time.

looks like a demonstration on self extraction when you don't have a big tree to use as an anchor. the multiple stakes distribute the forces to the ground. the truck would just pull out one stake that size.

and i hadn't seen a tow strap wrapped around something and then secured back to the line with a stick thru the eye before. simple idea, just never needed to do it like that.

i see the pic of all the match safes, which begs the question; what are your favorites and least favorites and why?

Xmp,

I'll be there Friday, Sat and Sunday. We'll swap some stories and hang out by the campfire.

The stick you pass through the recovery strap is called a "bone.". We use a 1" live stick and it makes connection and disconnection real easy.

As for match cases, go with the small Nalgene bottle (if you carry matches.) Put a striker inside the case in a small plastic baggie. Don't let it ignite the matches. Skateboard tape on the outside if you use strike anywhere's.

That is how we demonstrate vehicle recovery without a solid anchor and nothing more than 1-2-3 bracing.

Sounds great! I'm planning on driving up Thursday and staying through Sun. morning. Glad you can make it this year.
