For those of you out there with SRKs do any of you have one made of Carbon V from Japan? Recently I purchased an SRK because on the package in big letters it said "Carbon V" which is the whole reason I purchased it. The knive which is hair poping sharp says "made in Japan" and has a new coating on the blade which makes me think it is AUS8. I like AUS8 and evey knife I have had it on has worked great for me but the fact remains the package said "Carbon V" and Cold Steel has not emailed me back with an answere. I thought all the blades that were Carbon V were marked Carbon V and were made in the USA and had the more dull finish. Did they make a few Carbon V knives in Japan?

i don't no mines carbon v and does not say japan on it but if they sent you one that says that they should aether refund your money and let you keep the knife you have or send you the right knife that's just good business in my opinion

My Carbon V Cold Steel knives are all American made as far as I know, but I haven't bought one lately.

Carbon V was made by Camillus in the US, maybe they decided to use up the old packaging with the new aus8 models?

I don't have a SRK but I have a 12 year old Recon Tanto that has CARBON V clearly stamped on the blade.

I wonder why no one bought Camillus?

I recently posted a similar topic here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=484744.

I do not believe any of the Japan made ones are Carbon V. I received 2 knives that were advertised by Midway as Carbon V but were not so marked on the package and the blade did not have the red tape around it warning of rust like all my other Carbon V knives have had. Obviously there was trouble with Camillus that created this mess, but I don't see CS as deliberately trying to cheat anyone- it is probably just a mix up, they were using up old packaging. My two new knives both say Japan while the older one does say Carbon V and USA.

For what it is worth, after being pissed for a while, I actually like the newer version- I like the new finish and it seems a bit lighter than my Carbon V one and I also like the new grip texture.

Carbon V was exclusive to Cold Steel and was made solely by Camillus here in America.

Camillus is gone, and so is Carbon V.

As for why no one bought Camillus, the last owners ran the company into the ground, best I can tell. You can find more details in past posts in the Camillus Collector's Forum.

If you really want to know (and you're not going to return the knife), put a little vinegar or mustard or gun blue on the blade in a discreet spot with a Q-tip. If it darkens, you've got yourself a Carbon V knife. If not, it's the stainless AUS-8.

Made in Japan, however, means AUS-8 to me.

Well, which is better, the Carbon V or the AUS8? Rusting doesn't seem to be an issue, but let's face it, standard steel is considered superior in edge retention and in that configuration, it's also bound to be a tough knife. Most expensive stainless steels, as I understand it, try to achieve similar edge retention of standard steel while having a degree of corrosion resistance. Carbon V may also be easier to sharpen, I dunno.

Hey, AUS-8 is nothing to sneeze at, and you don't have to worry about tarnish/rust.

I have a USA made Casrbon V SRK. Great knife. After owning a Voyager in AUS8, I doubt that I'll ever own another stainless knife, unless it's something like S30V.

Just remember that Carbon V is a trade name for whatever steel Cold Steel contracts with the manufacturer to use. Rumor has it that for a long time Camillus used 0176-C for their Carbon V blades. But with Camillus out of the picture, there is no telling what steel it is. Whatever Cold Steel contracts for, that is what you get. They own the name, and can call any steel Carbon V.

True, it is a trademark but Guyon posted the info which details what it is (was).

but I don't see CS as deliberately trying to cheat anyone-

Well if they put an AUS8 knife in a package that says CarbonV on purpose that is lying to people and cheating them.

I'm wondering where you bought it: factory, knife store, online dealer or eBay?

It was purchsed from a store on a military base. It is not some ebay fake knife. I like the knife as I said but putting Carbon V on the package is not honest just as if you put a carbon knife in the box and is said AUS 8. Sending products out that are not marked properly so you can save money on not printing new carboard or paper inserts in the package is not honest. However I asked the question because I did not know if the company that was making them had some of Cold Steels steel sitting there when they closed and wondering if they sent it to Japan and they finished the knife. If I get time this week I will cal and ask Cold Steel instead of emailing them but I works odd hours and am not normaly home during their buisness hours (awake and good to go anyway LOL). I just wondered if anyone on here knew the scoop.

Geez dude, chill out- it is not a grand conspiracy that LT knew you were coming and did it just to piss you off. If you don't like it and feel that you were ripped off, return it and don't buy their products. You have no idea if the store you bought it from screwed up and put the wrong knife in the wrong box because something happened or if the packaging was screwed up on a new knife and they put it into an old box or whatever. That packaging is not what I have from mine (and I have 3 SRK's and a bunch of other Carbon V blades) so who knows what the heck happened. It is common knowledge among the knife industry and people who are knife nuts what happened with Camillus- Cold Steel hasn't made it a secret that the SRK's are now AUS 8- so why would they deliberately lie about it? Its probably just a mix up.
