Recent work of Josh Smith

Once in awhile I stop down at my neighbor Josh's abode and check out what the young man is working on.Never ceases to amaze me some of the stuff he does.Should have seen the sword for some emir in the mid east.Wowie zowie!!!!!!!!!!!!What a blade. The guy can sure make some cool goodies. Not always my piece of cake but always with a WOW factor.

You are a fortunate man to have that option Randy. I hope to have the pleasure of attending a hammer-in some time, but being a few thousand miles away has its disadvantages.

Did you fire the bowling ball cannon:D

This one I like! - A lot!

The others, well I'm just not fond of that heat blued damascus.

Impressive folders!

Kind regards,

Jos

Those look superbly well done, and I do like the bolster window idea. I agree with some here that there are too many screws, and I find them distracting. Like others here, I like the middle knife best.

Hey guys, pipe down.... I am sure no harm was meant
anywhere..... Little things like this are for Josh like water on
a duck's back... So just ignore, he surely will!

And Josh, the one in the middle really does it for me!

All the best,

True, but the poster was correct. It shows a distinct lack of class to criticize on an open forum. Praise in public, criticize in private. Or as your momma said, "If you don't have something nice to say, shut your pie hole.".

Josh made me this last yea. Its a special order with alot of my own idea, What do you think?

Mine is actually one of my favorites of his work. Getting to be involved with the design is really nice.

I had alot of input for the handle shape. As for the blade I asked for the tip to dip lower then some of the others he makes which have a persian thing goin. I wanted a clip and it makes the knive almost look like a fighter.

This is one of my most priced personal pieces.

Yes, Jon, this is one of the nicest of this design that
I have seen recently.

You are slowly but surely building a sweet collection
of Damascus folders....

All the best,

Thanks Dave.:)

Glad you like that knife- I remember you mentioned it before. Maybe one day it will find its place in a great knife book. :)

It is of true "world class" quality, Jon.
And this is also true for quite a few folders in your collection!

Good things can happen for those who can wait..... :)

All the best,

I'd like to encourage Josh and other makers of fine folders to research ways to make thumbdisks work with fine, elegant folders. This is done sometimes, but not enough in my opinion, and I am sure there are ways to use it as a design element, something that would contribute to, rather than detract from, the overall look.

Very nice! Lovely colors in that ivory, beautiful damascus.

Kind regards,

Jos

Joss, I assume you are asking this with a purpose in mind. I see at least one advantage for them ....that way a folder would be ambidextrous. Is it that you like tumbdisks or do you have any other reasons or see more advantages?

Personally, I like them better, I find them easier to use. I suspect there's a segment of the knife-buying population which has similar preferences. In addition, I think it could contribute positively to a design, if it's well thought through.

Although my tastes generally lean towards a more simplistic style, I like all three of the folders. The third is especially nice with the blue of the handle material being complemented by the blade and bolster.

Joss,
I would like to see a thumb disk that is actually part of the blade at some point. I am not sure how it would be done (forged?), but think it would be very visually appealing.
