I have a Norton 80 grit white wheel that works on everything I have used it on. I am not the expert on wheels but I'm getting another one in a finer grit too.
Hi - I don't have the details on hand, but more than one person I know uses the Norton SG wheels with very good results. Hopefully someone will come by with the grit and hardness of these wheels that they use.
A basic rule of thumb is that you use a soft wheel for hard material and a hard wheel for soft material. Since you are just starting out I would suggest the grey 32a norton wheels since you are probably going to be doing things that will require you to dress the wheels very often and there fore wearing out wheels very fast. the 5sg wheels are very good wheels that cut extreemly well but at about 80.00 bucks a piece it gets expensive to use these wheels until you get the hang of using your new toy without crashing the wheel and needing to redress it. Also a 46 grit wheel is capable of producing a very fine finish with proper dressing and grinding. there is a lot of good information in here.http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=44
