recommend 2-3 EDC for $200-250

How is the compression lock as a lefty

It seems very ambi to me. Or maybe even preferential for left-hand.

I've been activating it by "pinching" between my thumb and forefinger. Left-hand, I'm pushing with my thumb. Right-hand, I push with my forefinger.

:) Thank you, just ordered a black para2.

Was gonna suggest the Gayle Bradley until you said that it needed to be stainless. Not sure about how well one of those would stand up to beach life. Salt water would probably make it rust super fast though. So now, I'd say you're on the right track with the para. Check out the Benchmade 940 too. Awesome knife.

At least for me, as a lefty, I find that while the compression lock can be disengaged left-handed as you do, my grip on the knife is compromised. I like to invert the knife and use my thumb, then use inertia to flip the blade into the handle.

I'm new to knives and am looking to start a collection. The only knife I have is a Spyderco saver salt. I have it for the specific purpose of a rescue knife on my small sailboat. It is not an EDC knife.

I want to get 2-3 more knives to start my collection but dont want to spend too much and want to get a variety of sizes, shapes, blade steels, handle materials, locks, brands etc so I can see what I like and what I dont.

$200-$250 is a loose estimate and I am willing to go more or less than this depending on the quality. Obviously less would be better as long as I am getting good knives, as I would like to get a sharpmaker also.

The saver salt I have is a great knife for its purpose but I dont really like the frn handles. They feel kind of cheap to me, maybe because the one I have doesn't have liners. Here's some that I've been thinking about...

Spyderco:
Para 2
Manix 2
Caly 3.5
Sage

Benchmade:
525
556
551
707
710

Kershaw:
Leek
Chive
Scallion
Blur

Right now I'm leaning towards a Para 2, a mini grip, and a chive. I think this will give me a good variety of all the things above.
Para 2 would be the large knife with s30v ffg blade, g10 handles, compression lock
Mini grip would be the medium knife with 154cm blade, frn handles, axis lock
Chive would be small knife with 420HC blade, stainless handles, speedsafe frame lock

I could probably get these for right around $200 or just a little bit more. Am I going to dislike the frn handle on the mini grip since I dont like the one on my spyderco? If so, I'd be willing to pay the extra for the 707 as that seems like the pretty much the same knife but with different handles.

Does anyone else have any good recommendations for a variety of EDC's?

Leek. small, thin in the pocket, really fun. 25 dollars blemished. 14c28n, or 440a. another alternative would be the skyline, which is very light and unobtrusive. 25-30 dollars new. both about 3 inch
Blur or shallot. ~3.5 inches, very solid. normal shallot, 30 dollars, blemished. 14c28n. ZDP-189 Blur, 65 dollars, blemished
ZT 0200. hard use, 154 CM, 4 in. blemished, 85 dollars.

This would cover the 3 bases of a unobtrusive folder, a slightly larger folder for those occasions when it is needed, and then a hard use folder would not hesitate to chop a tree down with if i had no other options.

The fact that they are all blemished means that they are users, and not safe queens. i have several blems, and there has been one slightly weird grind on my skyline, a weird spot in the coating of my 0200, and an uneven spot in the coating on my blur. all are acceptable, at the savings offered. if you want something for times when you are with sheeples, then getting a damascus shallot could be useful for it's artsy factor.

total price: $175. that is all you are going to, reasonably, need.

Zt 0551 and 2 Sanrenmu knives :D if it doesnt have to be stainless, id go with a Gayle Bradley and something else

I'd go with a ZT 0200, a composite blade Leek, a Sanrenmu 763, and a Kershaw OD-2.

That gives you 4 sizes and a few different design philosophies to play with for around $170 total.

I'm a huge fan of the BM 710.. Great knife IMO.
