I am selling a few things on eBay right now, and will be running into money that I don't normally have. By keeping it in the paypal account, I avoid the SWMBO tax, and the obvious loss of it (to some worthess cause callled cost of living). I will be getting somewhere around $150, money I could blow on bills, but will instead be investing in a piece of fine cutlery. I have been desiring a Spyderco Military in BG-42 for quite sometime, but I am now fearing that I will be disappointed (liner-lock, over-hype, smells funny, etc.). Also I have a full size Manix, and it may be just too similar (which is not always a bad thing). If you could reccomend something better, or give me a VSITBOMH (virtual-smack-in-the-back-of-my-head) and tell me to go with the Military, that would be great.
Criteria:
>Great blade steel (down to 440C (which I consider to be a great blade steel))
>Pocket clip
>Around $150
>I like a little tactical, but something non-tactical might be a breath of fresh air.
>Nothing that is designed to cut through Helo cockpits.
>No Plastic handle
Thank you for your response to yet another recommendation thread.

Al Mar Sere 2000. I just got one. That's one solid, well-built knife. Wicked edge from the factory too.

+1 on 440 C being a great but underapreciated steel
+1 on a custom fixed blade
I always wanted a spyderco civilian but I bought a byrd crossbill and saved at least 200$
The new ontario folders are nice especially the Retribution

Maybe try a Kershaw Spec Bump. It's very impressive knife for the money. Solid and heavy. The blade shape is unique and some people are turned off by it, but IMO, it's pretty ingenious. The bump allows for very accurate cutting as well as deep aggressive slices with the recurve. The edge towards the tip (after the bump) is straight and it does a very good job with delicate cuts. The handle ergos are very nice and the G10 is grippy. A very comfortable knife in the hands. Finally, the stud-lock seems to do a great job and I havent had any failures.

My top picks (either or):
Benchmade Mini Rukus
Spyderco CF BG42 Military

Others:
BM 710
BM HK34
Spyderco Manix, Mini Manix, Yohimbo
Kershaw Blue/Green Bump

I'd suggest a blue/green bump. Tactical build with a very...pretty...non tactical look. If you can forgive me for invoking the "t-word."

It's about 10 more than your request, but, totally worth it.

Just purchased a Spyderco Military BG-42 with carbon fiber scales. I had to think about it for a few days before buying it but decided that that knife would be an awesome addition to my collection and to end the year right:thumbup:. I also got a sheath for it from Vadim on eBay so all will be good in the New Year:).

BTW, I also have the large Manix like you already and felt that there are enough differences between both knives to justify adding it to my collection of EDC rotation knives.

If you want something that look a bit different than spydies, but still slightly tactical, what about a BM940 ?
i got one, and i love it!

in addition, what about doing a list of all our suggestion, and paying a cortesy visit to a knife shop?
you'll have opportunity to see "in reality" what we suggest, it might help you choosing your prefered one...
Everybody has his personnal taste...

Try the new Mini-Rukus from Benchmade it retails for 220 and can be found for well under 150 if you look around.

*smack*

Go with the BG-42 Millie, it's awesome! Yes it's a liner lock, but it's probably the best liner lock you can get. Smells funny? never heard of that (I've got 2, and they sure don't smell funny). Over hyped? Well I don't think so; it IS the best version of the Military so far imnsho :)

Another vote for CF Military.

(but it HAS platic handle. What we call carbon fiber or G10 is epoxy reinforced with fibers, either carbon or glass fibers. And epoxy IS form of plastic.)

What you can also consider: Benchmade Gravitator or Benchmade Bali-song (e.g. 42).

BM635 mini-skirmish. I'm more of a Sebenza/custom knife guy and most production pieces don't do much for me but the mini-Skirmish is an exception. Best production knife I've seen under $150. I bought one for my dad for fathers day a couple years ago and he loves it.

Oh boy! Now I'm conflicted. I never gave the (mini) Skirmish a thought until now. Now I can't decide between the two. I like the thought of titanium handles with those cool designs, but I really want to give BG-42 a try. How does the mono-lock differ from a normal frame lock?

I recommend the Kershaw Spec Bump ($110) for the Tactical minded, or the Kershaw Ti Bump ($150) for a more Sheeple friendly knife. The Ti Bump is a Titanium Handled, frame lock with polished S30V. Great knife!

I would get two,A benchmade Axis lock and a Alaskan guide 110(Buck s30v) from Cabelas. To each his own.
