Recommend a bushcrafting blade for my "get home bags"

I maybe off the mark on this one but I was surprised in a good way with this cold steel peace maker lll..I bought it because it was cheep and I had some money left on a gift card...I think its a scandi grind..? They also have a peace maker ll which is larger...I used it this past Christmas when I was selling xmas trees and it worked great..."just an idea"

if getting home is important to you, and if you value your hide, if you really feel a knife is going to play an important part in that, why put such a low price on it?

Because in reality, any well made fixed blade can perform the tasks needed for short term survival bush crafty things. The condor line can easily handle this at a "low price". The higher end stuff is really just more fun.

Why spend a bunch of money on something you will never use when something less expensive will work just as well?:p

Many cheap knives aren't worth what you pay for them.

I would hate to find out, by snapping a blade in half at the worst possible time, that cheaper knives have spotty quality control through just about every step of production.

I've "made do "without a knife before, but it sucks at the best of times. The last things I go cheap on are knives, boots, belts, backpacks, flashlights, and canteens.

Here are my thoughts on this, all opinion of course.

Perhaps it was just a wording error, but to me a Get Home Bag (GHB) is just that. Something to get you home as quickly as possible where your other gear is stored. Typically you're on foot for any number of reaons. I don't plan on doing any bushcrafting with my GHB, it's just what I need to get me home within a day. If I am going to be more than a days walk from home I take a different bag. Bug out bags (BoB) should include some bushcrafting gear. Your situation may differ on terrain, population density, proximity from work to home, etc. Maybe take a look at what the bag is really designed to do and tailor it accordingly.

I never said go cheap. There is a difference between cheap and inexpensive. Look at my posts. If you do your research there are great values to be had out there for an inexpensive BOB knife that can do many of the things a higher end knife can. I stand by my reasoning. No need to blow a ton of cash on a knife you will hopefully never use when there are inexpensive alternatives that can get the same job done in a pinch. Condor, Svord, BKT, Mora, many of these are well under budget, dare I say inexpensive....but not "cheap".

Hey guys!

I very much considered the reliability of a blade that may need to sustain me. With that said my primary blade is the L.T. Wright Genesis. So the new blades need to fill the back up roll but not fall apart if I need them. After watching many videos of people abusing them I think they are up to the task. I am actually considering just making my own Genesis clones at this point since I have been working on my skills. I am ordering A-2 steel and building a forge.... :-)

As for the GHB aspect of this. First, the bag needs to be tailored to each individual's needs and expectations. For many this may mean hiking home for a certain distance etc. which would probably require very little gear. I have deiced to take it a bit further. For me the bag has multiple uses. Here is a quick list: emergencies (car/shooting accidents, scraps, burns), get home if I am stranded (in WA state you could be miles from people if you are adventurous), hiking emergency bag (get lost which may require bushcrafting). It's nice having a bag that has multiple uses. If the wife and I are in Idaho and want to go for a hike in bear country I just grab the bag...

Here is a video of a guy working with the Condor Bushlore. I'm sold on it....
