Recommend a first EDC slippie

I think a either a barlow or swayback would be good for a first slippy. Something else to consider is a canoe. They are available from different makers in carbon steel, but be aware that some have two backsprings and some only have one. The single backspring models are nice and slim while still having two blades. I kinda like the looks of the Boker Beer Barrel version myself.

My two favorites are Soddies and Stockmen. I did recently pick up a furtaker trapper made by GEC and I really like it as well. I have not handled enough congress pattern knives to sell the pattern but I like the blade arrangements. I really need to have a warnie or a sheepsfoot blade in my pocket and when I am carrying a Soddie I feel just as secure. I think I am going to try and make a trip down to your area if I can find the time. I can spend hours in SMKW and have. Boy it makes the wife mad.

Using your OP as a basis, I have to say either a canoe pattern or a jack knife pattern by Case or others. I have been carrying a canoe lately and have really gotten to like it a lot. The large spear blade is very handy and the smaller pen blade is good for delicate work.

Just to stir the pot a little. There is no one best answer. Many different patterns will do the job, but you need to consider what "the job" is to guide you to the best selections for your situation. And, your own personal likes and dislikes in styles and patterns will no doubt influence your choice(s). I have found that as time goes by, my choices will fluctuate to different styles. For example, if you go to my profile, you will see that when I signed up here, my favorite knife was my Benchmade 812S mini-AFCK. And I still like it; it's a great knife. But after some time buying what I call "black knives", I find myself being attracted back to the traditional offerings and slip joint designs. All of the traditional knives have strengths and weaknesses depending upon what "the job" is.

I'm sure you are aware of all of this. It makes the choosing more fun when you have such a wide variety of patterns and styles available.
