Hey Jack, (I didn't want to rip Danelle off. It took me a couple of seconds to catch that one the first time and I'm usually all over bad puns.)glad to see that you have caught the bug. All of the above are good suggestions. I'm a big Spyderco can and love my Calypso Jr. in black micarta with the plain edge. The Wegner Jr is also a great knife. Once you start though you'll be hooked so you might as well go ahead and buy a really expensive one and get it over with. You can't go wrong with a Chris Reeve Knives Small Sebenza. It will cost about 3 times your max ($290 now I think) but it will last you the rest of your life and maybe your children too. If you want something even smaller you could look at his Umfaan model. It is very small but cuts like a much bigger knife. I've quickly become a BG-42 steel fan. I know that that seems like a lot of money but after a couple of years of buying Spydercos and Benchmades etc (both excellent companies) you'll work your way up to the higher ticket stuff. If you came here to find out about filet knives and you've stayed this long you're already showing signs of the "sickness". When you start lying to family and friends about the price of your knives then you know you are in the advanced stages.
I forgot to see where you live, but the best thing you can do is find a knife or knife/gun show in your area and talk to some dealers and play with the knives on their tables. When you find a knife that you like, and a dealer you like and feel you can trust, then buy it.

It's worth looking at anyway. You can from time to time find a decent deal on a used Sebenza here or on some of the other forums but if this is going to be your first you might want to buy a new one (if you decide to drop that much green in the first place.)
