hey all, new guy here. have several folders but none that lock in the closed position. im looking for one that i dont have to worry about opening in my pocket or anywhere else i may be carrying it. the ones i have have thumbstuds to assist in opening but could easily catch on something and open it inadvertently. this will be EDC and see military duty. pretty open to pricing, brands etc.

Kershaw Leek, Scallion, and Chive as well as the Kershaw Centofante lock closed. The SOG Flash and Flash II lock closed as well. I would recommend the Leek.

I have seen the lock on some spec/speed bumps, iirc. however, if you are wearing it in your pocket with the blade spine against the seam, then you will be just fine. i have never had a knife open on me in that position.

+1 for the Leek.

I personally don't ever lock it closed, but with the proper tuning, you could get it to where it will lock and open with ease.

Any specific size you were looking for?

Lone Wolf Paul Defender

I have one, and I really like it.

However, for military use, it's not really strong enough to take real abuse. Oh, it'll penetrate alright, but any real lateral stress on the blade or tip and it'll most likely be history.

Cool knife, in any case....

Lone Wolf has other designs with the Axial lock as well. If you're looking for a folder that will be for overall utility, I've read that a good multitool is about as practical as you can get for soldiers. I've had a Leatherman Wave for years in all sorts of bags and pockets and the blade has never come close to accidental opening. If you're looking for a folder that might see combat, you might want to look at a fixed blade instead. Just some thoughts.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm looking into them. I guess it doesn't necessarily have to lock closed, but if it was retained in the closed position better than most folders I would be interested. Looking for a blade around the 3 inch ish length. A little less or more is ok.

I actually have been carrying a leatherman wav for years and it's served me well. Still carrying it but was looking to find a knife as a primary knife, something that's built tough and could take abuse if need be. Doesn't need to be a combat knife just something I can trust.

We get a good amount of people who served in the armed forces and carried all types of folders. I've never read about them having a problem with accidental opening. I'm sure if you get a quality knife from a reputable company, you'll be fine. A Spyderco Military seems like a nice place to start. I edc that or a Hinderer XM-18 and never felt the detent wasn't strong enough. Though the Military's detent is pretty good in my experience.

I think any button-lock knife will fit the bill.

Boker has several. Mine are all autos, but they are all made as manual folders. The TopLock, AK-74 and others.

I also have a CRKT Anubis with Auto-LAWKS, which is even a further safety preventing accidental opening or closing. I think thye have other models with auto-LAWKS as well.

Iv'e been carrying a sog trident tigershark everyday since 2005 on duty in NYPD never let me down.. and iv'e abused it plenty using in ways the manufacturer never intended solid arc lock and locks closed which is important since i stand sit run and climb and having a knife open in pocket would ruin my day :)

comes in a variety of finishes colors blade styles etc....also has a side rope cutter which ive actually used to cut a seatbelt or 2

heres the specs as well as a few pics of diff styles

My girlfriend carries a SOG and loves it. I agree with the above posters that a SOG assisted opener is a good bet.

My favorite folder is the Benchmade 585 mini Barrage. I carry the partially-serrated version, preferred for my use, but it also comes in plain-edge and either black or satin finish 154CM flat-ground blade. It has unnecessary but astounding Assisted-Opening, Axis-lock (safer than a liner-lock, solid, one-handed open/close, and makes the knife totally ambidextrous), and it has a safety switch that can be engaged to keep the knife locked open or locked closed.
The knife is ergonomic, very comfortable, nicely compact (though not slender), handles easily, has skeletonized liners for added strength - it's a solid little work-horse of a folder. Fit & finish is excellent, and it has BM's lifetime guarantee. It's new enough that a lot of brick&mortar stores still carry them (if they carry any Benchmade). If it fits your budget, I recommend it. The 585 feels like it was made specifically for my hands, but my hands are small - if you can handle it before purchase that's always better in case some other knife fits your hands better, but either way it's worthy of a look. That's my $0.02.

i do like the barrage and owned one until recently but i think the handle is a little rubbery and thick IMO thing opens like a monster though prob the best a/o ive seen what i like about the sogs is their light weight and i can use them easily while wearing operators gloves etc...

Any knife with a ball detent worth it's salt is going to stay closed when it is closed until required to open. also, i know that at least kershaw's speedsafe will keep a folder closed as well as open it... ymmv
