recommend a good folder that locks closed

Any knife with a ball detent worth it's salt is going to stay closed when it is closed until required to open. also, i know that at least kershaw's speedsafe will keep a folder closed as well as open it... ymmv

+1 to both points. If autos are your thing, and you're MIL, then definitely check out the Kershaw 7000 breakout. Also, this is a terrific video showing a whole bunch of knives around your blade-size range. Nut'n'fancy at SHOT 2011, Kershaw booth:

so i handled a sog trident and a flash II at dicks sporting goods yesterday. not too impressed. they just seem fairly cheap to me. gonna keep looking

I had that problem with a Sebenza. Keys and knife are in the same pocket and sometimes when I removed the keys the ring hooked onto the stud.

Solution - file down the stud !! Now the knife opens easily but only when I want it to !

That was my feeling as well. The Kershaw Blur has a better feel, but i think that it does not have the extra safety lock you are requesting.
Really, get your hands on a Benchmade 585 mini barrage - nothing cheap feeling about it. It has dual steel liners (something the SOG trident lacks) for added strength. When locked open, it acts almost like a fixed-blade (wouldn't try batonning with it though), and locked closed it'll never release without direct manipulation. It's totally one-hand operated, ambidextrous.
Instead of the SOG Flash (I or II) try out a Kershaw Leek - also assisted opening but better construction and has a little tab where the blade folds into the handle, to lock the knife closed. Leeks come in all manner of variations, including 2 different serration-types and any steel type you could as for.
The leek is a dress-folder, not a knife for heavy tasks. The mini-barrage is cousin to Kershaw's Blur, both stronger for heavier use.

Recently discontinued S30V Kershaw Boa has a lock to keep the blade closed.
The Boa is the middle knife.
