I'm interested in purchasing a poncho. I'd like something of high quality that won't rip or start to leak after only a few uses. I'm just a hair under 6' tall and I want a poncho that will go over a good sized day/weekend pack but not come below the knees. I'd also like something that can be used as a tarp/groundcloth/shelter if I ever make it on a bare bones trip this summer. What do you guys use? Any suggestions? Pics would be helpful too if you have em :D

Awesome thanks Riley. I think that's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. Know a good place to order one from?

I also like the nylon extendable backpacking poncho from www.campmor.com. Mine is quite good quality. I have one of their smaller silnylon ponchos for ultralight trips.

I have an Army poncho that was given to me about 40 years ago. Still works.

A suggestion: to provide a little more protection to the area below the knees try twisting the poncho so that a corner hangs between the knees. Unfortunately, with a large pack the poncho doesn't fully protect the area behind the knees so the back of your thighs might get wet.

Edit: if you get a poncho, get yourself a poncho liner while you are at it. The GI poncho liners are one of the greatest inventions known to man.

here's another +1 for the mil issue poncho.

the skirt of it will probably sit just a bit below your knees.

Tal. I mostly use figure 8 knots to make loops that can pass through the grommets, than I pass the cord through the loops.. Super secure and quick to take down...
I think most useful oponcho knots Although this is just purely opinion
are (figure 8)
Prussik
and a truckers hitch (although I think this is not the right name)

I like to carry some lightweight Bungee cords with my USGI poncho. Makes set up a snap and best of all it keeps the poncho from flapping around in the wind.

Good idea: I bought some shock cord from REI and put loops on the corners of my tarp. I think it not only quiets a poncho/tarp in the wind but extends its life by relieving some of the stress on it.

I am a pretty good guy.

Sorry I couldn't resist.:o

I just use the cheapos they sell in the little plastic baggies. I usually end up tossing them and not drying them out properly.
