recommend a leather sheath maker

In general unless you ask for a thin one, I make them like I like em...thick!
I do have to say, that I have slimmed down the entire line over about the last year. I was getting a little carried away there for a while with the thickness. :o

There's nothing wrong with liking 'em thick.

Thanks Mark!

click on my sig for more details BBQ BOY. :)

LeatherSwine can mangle leather any way you want it. Ask him what he has for inlays. My NO-E black whipsnake inlay is SWEET!

I've got to call him and see what he has in stock. I just might have a teeny bit of credit left that I can use up. Then again, I probably don't, but why should that stop me?

Hey LeatherHog! Call me if you're still up. :)

Thank you my friend. :) Its quiet time around here, everyone else is in bed and unfortunately light sleepers. :o

I'm not sure if your number is on my newer phone, had it almost a year now. Might have to send me an e-mail.

Got lots of exotics in house right now, whip snake, karung snake, black shark, some rattler, some python, a little ray skin (various colors) a couple of emu feet, some sweet gator and croc,,,,,, lotsa stuff. oh yea, always some lizard here and there.

I think this is what I am looking for. Minimal bulk, the beauty of leather and retention of kydex. Not to mention versatility in design.

Thanks

I'm a big fan of Martin's work. I'm in the queue for a couple or three, as soon as the knives themselves come back from the Custom Shop.

well i'm in for a sheath for my newly acquired HR as well, and was going through the different options.

i want something as indestructible as kydex, but nevertheless soft as leather to the finish.
is tactical nylon the answer?

or isn't kydex that bad on the finish? personally i've not seen leather rott, but maybe i just don't have enough leather around me...

Yes, folks, he is a chubby chaser.

There are sheaths made with with nylon, but they have plastic or Kydex liners for the blade. Makers include Lost Mountain iron Works, Semper Paratus, and SPec-Ops. Plastic by itself can't scratch hardened steeel, but dirt and grit can get inside a sheath and that will cause the wear marks.

but Kydex can scratch the black finish of the blade, though not the blade itself, can't it?

Storing knifes in kydex sheats is foolishness. And while using them, couple kydex mark won't be the worst ones.

Yes, it will make rub marks on the coating. If the knife is a user, then who cares? And if the knife is a safe queen, then don't sheath it.

why's that? what's wrong with storing knives in kydex sheaths?
Nothing that I know of. If the sheath is done correctly it won't rub either. With any sheath, leather or kydex there's the risk of debris or grit/sand getting embedded and scratching the knife. If it's a safe queen, any sheath could cause a problem. If it's a user, a good sheath is a must.

I have high carbon knives stored in their sheaths for years with no ill effects, but I am not going to discourage or suggest anything right now.

Both actually.

The key is to take care and not re-sheath a damp and/or dirty knife and keep the sheath dry. If a sheath does get wet its time to take care and make sure it gets thoroughly dried before its used again, both leather and kydex take a very long time to dry properly. Leather should be dried slowly and at room temp to avoid over hardening. I guess a hair dryer would work on kydex eh? But not on leather, you'll have a shoe sole by the time your done.

trapped moisture is the enemy, not the sheath itself.

does kydex really hold moisture? i thought of it more like a plastic box, that doesn't get wet at all (i mean through moist air or something).

i've read that the leather that gets used for sheaths is waxed and all, but f.e. i've your camping or are outdoors for a longer time in rainy weather, the danger of the leather starting to go mouldy is rather high, isn't it? compared to kydex, or nylon, that is.

Kydex is kind of like a plastic box, put your wet, damp, or dirty blade in that plastic box and it cant dry out, you get rust. Put a dry, well cared for blade in there and nothing happens.

Mold happens when moisture is in contact with a surface for an extended period of time. Around here, Southern US, when it gets wet it stays that way for a bit, and we get mold spores everywhere.

Absorbent materials will hold moisture longer than non absorbent materials and have a better chance of incurring mold. But anything can mold depending on how long its wet, sometimes a day, sometimes a week.

In short, take care of your gear and it will take care of you.

If you feel comfortable sending our knife to the Netherlands get in touch with Martin Swinkles. http://martinsheaths.blogspot.com/

He combines Kydex with leather. Kydex inside, leather outside. Very thin in comparison to all leather. I sent my FFBM to him and i love it.

He can make just about anything you want with many, many additions. Take a look. I know you'll like them.

Oh and by the way, as you scroll down the blog, you'll see my FFBM.

Ok. Here is the load down. How about make some suggestions. I am going to go with Martin Swinkle or Michael Volclae from Volclae Designs.
Anyway I jut received my first Busse, which is the Skinny Ash and i have a Busse Anorexic Boss Street coming in a few weeks and I would like a sheath for that as well. What I know I want for the Skinny Ash is Leather/Kydex with a fire steel loop and I really am trying to decide if it is possible to have a piggy back for that sheath along with it. The only problem is I have no idea what type of knife I want as a piggy back. I just can't see myself going into the woods or camping with just that big knife without the capabilities of a smaller blade for bushcraft.
Next for the 4" Busse Anorexic Boss Street(C.A.B.S) knife would be another leather/kydex sheath with a firesteel loop.
I so have a 3" ESEE3 that needs a new Kydex sheath with fire steel loop.
