that izula sure looks mouthwatering :p

Doesn't it? And just how tasty would it be in desert tan with green :p I like the looks of it also. But I really don't know about the quality of the steal and heat treat. I will buy more then one neck knife in time as I like Neck knives look. Hey I wouldn't be on this forum if I wasn't a knife nut right?:D I have been checking the for sale section for neck knives. I found a Busse but he's asking $200. I think Busse sells their new neck knife, the Scotch dispenser for under $140:rolleyes: But I can't imagine using the Scotch Dispenser. Just not pleasing to the eyes and looks uncomfortable. Well if Jerry is right then Busse should put out an Anorexic Assault Shaker soon enough. Though it would be interesting to hold the two and compare. Maybe you are right about patience and I should attend a Knife show and hold and feel the neck knives available. Thank you Guyon your post have been very helpful. And thanks to everyone who has responded and posted pictures/links. I am still wanting suggestions but I have made some decisions already. By the way, I really prefer defaultuser's design over the PSK. And I noticed that the Rat Izulu looks much like your knife, but with a smaller handle. Has thumb ridges to prevent slipping, and both are well shaped to fit the hand. defaultuser's looks very comfortable in the hand. If Busse was making the Izulu instead of Rat, and they were being sold online right now, I would 2:D Ok I would buy one and a PSK or something custom. I do like how the PSK has a wide blade, and the spine is very straight from the back almost to the tip. Looks like you can do miner digging with it and a strong tip as well. Similar to the CR soldier. I am glad there are so many good choices out there. I can hardly wait to get a neck knife, I may head to Plaza Cutlery tomorrow just to hold the CR soldier as it's close to the neck knives I am seeing in these photos.

Drivebytrucker, that article was written over a year ago. I'm making the PSK knife several different ways. Sheaths are an option.

You might try Mike Carter. I just bought his skinner and he does some very fine work. You'll find them at cartercrafts.com

I was thinking of this one for myself:

Wow how did I not see this one before? Great find presz thanks:thumbup:
I tried to call some places today but waited until it was to late to make an order. So my decision and order will be made on Monday. It will be easier to call them as I need price matching and availability confirmation. But the search will continue for Neck knives as I plan to add more as time goes on. They are cool looking and stronger then a folder, but not as bulky as a fixed blade with a thick handle. And I am surprised with the great quality/value/craftsmanship I am seeing from these custom neck knives and I think it's time I contact someone and have one made. please keep this thread going as I see some great knives being posted both production and custom. After I order I will post up links as to what I am getting and how they will be used. I know some will be affixed to the outside of a Large Fixed Blade sheath as I have seen that done before. I believe some of these are small enough to fit inside the hollow handle of my Gerber Hatchet. And yeah they are cool looking to:D

There have been some great suggestions, that's for sure, & I like the one that the member made himself.

Personally, the 3 best neckers that I've used, are the Emerson La Griffe, HAK (HideAwayKnife), & Spyderco SPOT. The finger hole makes it easy to align & retain. Unfortunately, the SPOT's are not made anymore & I'm not sure HAK's have fixed their "issues", but the La Griffe is an excellent neck knife.

For something larger, the Becker/Necker is excellent along with many of the other suggestions.

Good luck with you choice.

CL01 how have you used the La Griffe? For what chores and purposes has it served you? It looks cool. In fact I La Griffe copied nature when he designed his neck knife to have the same geometry as natures most efficient knife, it looks like a claw:D It looks exactly like a tiger claw, or a shark tooth. Very cool. I am very interested in how you use this knife in the field as it could work great I'm just having a hard time wrapping my mind around it. Same goes with the HideAwayKnife. These knives are really cool looking and look to be more useful in the field. http://www.hideawayknife.com/concept/new/image005.gif
I think they have some great knives albeit geared more towards south defense.

Being that we are both from CA I am worried these might be considered illegal, or more frowned upon by law enforcement then a classic clip point neck knife. These would be great for self defense I can see that. But not sure about using one of these in the field for other task. I checked out the Spyderco Neck Knife and it looked geared to urban carry/self defense like the La Graffe and HAK.
I've been checking out more of Scott Gossman's knives in his sub forum and really like what I am seeing/reading. He makes a PSK as pictured earlier, and a PSK JR, and PSK SR. I'm really liking the PSK SR, well I'm liking all of them:)
Tony post a few of the PSK's side by side http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=536555&page=5
Some custom made Neck knives floating around in the for sale section.
I can hardly wait until Monday to place an order. Keep posting these great neck knives:thumbup:

Pat Crawford makes some nice ones.

I have a prototype Rat Cutlery Izula and it is awsome, very High quality, believe me. I am waiting impatiently for the production model because it has a thinner blade.

I carry my Gene Ingram Pocket Hippo in a neck sheath at work. But, I think my Nemesis Knives Arch Alley might be what you are looking for. It is an EXCELLENT knife!! I will include a picture and a link to Nemesis Knives.

That Nemesis knife looks like something made by Spyderco. Funny how you can order your knife plain edge, or Spyder serrated. Also made in Japan with VG10, it must be associated with Spyderco in some way. I also noticed some Spyderco models have a lanyard hole in their handle for carry; but not all of them. I currently EDC a Spyderco but looking to have it replaced. I always have a folder with my while camping, but that is all changing now. I don't think I want a folder for backup anymore. Maybe never again carry a folder in the woods. Just my Multi Tool if that counts as the blades are being better made now. I think these neck knives would be far better then even the best folders; and for about the same weight and size. Just two more days til Monday.

And people other than Spyderco CAN buy a license to use the Spyderco hole too. And your problem is??

The Arch Ally is a great knife. I am sure the Hellion is too, but I do not own one.

The only neck knife I own is "The Spike" by Cold Steel. Not designed for bushcraft, but it's pretty stout (you could batton fire wood with it), lightweight, and the edge is what I believe is called a Scandi, i.e., the bevel starts from the spine and there is no secondary bevel, but it just goes right to the edge. Amazingly sharp, and at the same time it's a very rugged edge because it has a lot of meat behind it. Comes with a plastic snap-in sheath that can be hung around the neck with a chain or shoe lace. I occasionally carry it that way. They have several different blade configurations. Here's one.

PS I carried mine as a neck knife the whole time I was travelling in Italy, though I'm not sure if that's legal there.

i really like the spike series too i had one for while i suggest either the tokyo spike

or the scottish spike

Which Nemesis looks like it's a Spyderco? I also carry a Nemesis Hellion as a keychain knife, BTW.

DrivebyTrucker, sorry, I should've looked at where you live. You're right, S. Cal is not friendly towards those kinds of knives. Personally, I'm in LE, so it's different for me (Sorry about that, but it's just the way it is).

As for more info on how I use those knives, please email me at:
cockedlocked01 at yahoo dot com & I'll be more than happy to email you & give you some suggestions, info, etc.

Good luck.

Besides the ones mentioned I will add to your confusion :D by throwing in the Strider SLCC (Slim line concealed carry). I have haks, lagriffes (productions & customs) but wouldnt want to be lost in the woods with them. The SLCC would make me a lot more comfortable.

You seem to be the only who has a problem. Maybe it's the frown face; not sure how that got in there but no way to edit out. It is a great design I am surprised more people don't buy a license to use their spyder hole and spyder edge. I can think of a few other cool innovations that should be licensed out to other manufactures. I really like Ken Onions torsion bar auto assist knives and think it would be great to see that design on other knives. Spyderco's really are distinctive looking knives and I rarely see other knives that bare a resemblance to them. I got the chance to hold most of these knives today. The CR Soildier, the Buck Mayo/Kaala, the Cold Steel Spike, the custom knives which inspired the Spike and where even better, some from CRKT; then I moved on to hold most of the knives the store carried:D Including much of Chris Reeves line including the Sebenza, Stryders, many Benchmades, many great knives. Been wanting to get my hand on Spyderco Military for a while now and was surprised to feel how light it felt in my hand. I also compared it to the new Benchmade folder that looks like a Griptillian on Steroids. This was one of them http://www.gpknives.com/item/benchmade-rift.html Holding this folder reaffirmed why I want a skelotonized neck knife. Granted the folder was built like a tank and a very strong and capable knife. But it was bulkier then a neck knife, heavier, and no matter how strong the Axis lock is, it can't match the strength of a knife forged from a single piece of steel. Same goes with bullet proof Stryder folders. The Spyderco Military was different. It was sleek, light, good grip and the strength is acceptable for most cutting chores. I wouldn't hammer it into wood or something:p My new Spydie for sure. CL01 as I was holding the La Griffe, HAK, and CS Spike, it was explained to me by the shop owner just how it can be used; at least in a tactical sense. Which is cool I suppose. Even got some ideas as to where and how to carry it. But I am interested into how it would be useful in the field. My first thought was that the CS Spike could make a great bird/trout knife. Also where is LE is that in CA? Anyway in CA and much of the country these knives are frowned upon but on unincorporated Federal land while hiking in National Forest, National parks, BLM land ect, it's perfectly legal, acceptable, and I will definitely have one on my next trip. Most likely the CS Spike. Here is the Strider SLCC http://www.lapolicegear.com/mistsltakn.html And here is another Knife that would work great as a Necker from Strider http://www.lapolicegear.com/stmfsknwikys.html It's called the MFS (My First Strider). Can't say I agree with how he names his knives. How about calling it a Strider BMF. I'll let your imagination come up with words for that acronym:D Luckily for me and anyone else who loves the look of neck knives, Stryder seems to have a love affair with tuff, skelontonized handled knives that are only wrapped in easily removed para cord. Many of his knives can work as neck knives or minimalist knives. I like the way he thinks. The Buck neck knife felt small in my hand. The CR Soldier felt great. I may soon have a chance to buy either one from the designers themselves:D
