recommend a sharpening system

razor sharp? really? lets see ya shave your face with a blade after you sharpen a knife on that sharp maker!

I would not suggest a sharpmaker.

I've had excellant luck with The Spyderco Sharpmaker. Tok me about two knives to truly master it, but noe I can make damn near any knife razor sharp.

I like the sharpmaker.......
But, I have heard it has a problem with wire edges, is this true?

your actually going for a wire edge when sharpening/setting a new edge. it's one way you can tell you got to the edge.

The fine rods on a Sharpmaker will have hair flying off your arm

Jesus christ, why do people think this is a great way of telling if something is sharp? shaving arm hair does not really show that a knife is sharp!

Wow, three responses bashing the Sharpmaker and not one of them a reply to the OP. That's bad form. We all know you hate the thing, why not just put it into a sig line and be done with it? You could at least plug the paper wheels while you're in here.

You can get a Spyderco Sharpmaker for that, but the extra fine rods are more money. Spyderco made sharpening systems before they made knives, if that matters.

yeppers. it comes with fine and medium grit. buy the set and for extra get the ultra fine and the diamond ones. that = a complete set. you will not need any other sharpening system period

Each sharpening tool on the market will sharpen a knife and allow it to cut, how sharp or how good of a edge YOU produce is not the tools problem.

OP, you want cheap? Buy a $20 Norton combo India stone some scrap leather and some stropping compound. Learn to sharpen and once you can CONSISTENTLY apply a razor sharp edge to any knife, then think about advancing your gear to more expensive options.

I like how cheap King brand combo water stones work. They create this really thick slurry that inhibits the formation of parallel grind marks on the edge and leaves a fine stonewashed finish. 250/1000 grit combo stone is less than 30 bucks and works great. Strop and compound can be had for less than 10 bucks, I use newspaper and compound.
