Recommend a tactical fixed blade knife - sub $100

Just to have around the house, self defense. Maybe also to take with when hiking, etc.

I'd like a 5" or 6" blade also.

I like the SOGs, but for "outdoorsy" stuff too, I'll suggest:

Buck Vanguard ($50)
Fallkniven F1 ($100)

BladeForums has gone plum crazy for both of them lately...I'm thinking of getting the Vanguard for just about the same reasons I think you are...I want a "do it all" knife.

For self defense, get a gun, or take a class on self defense before you buy a knife. Then you'll know exactly what you want.

like silenthunter said.....a dedicated tactical home self defense knife...that's one thing and a guns (or bat) is probably better.

A very, very general purpose fixed blade...today I like the Vanguard.

Tomorrow...who knows?...These people around here keep making me change my mind.

I'll throw these out for your consideration:

Grohmann Canadian Boat Knife...Bark River Gameskeeper...Marbles Plainsman...

For self defense purposes a knife is way down the list for me. I really don't want to get that close. He may be more skilled than I am.

For "do it all" types F1, RAT5, BRK&T Bravo 1, The Buck Vanguard in S30V out of Cabalas for around $90 is a good pick.

I'm not so worried about self defense, I live in a high rise and in a good part of town. I don't particularly want a gun, so a knife is better than nothing.

How different is a tactical self defense knife versus a general purpose fixed blade?

What about the Ka Bar knives? They seem reasonably priced.

ka-bars are great knives for the price. after reading on here for a while i cut off the top guard and like it alot.
i, also, am a big fan of my TAK1. the RAT5 as mentioned above should also be a good buy.

I just saw that KaBar came out with this:

KaBar Bull Dozier 12.13" AUS8A Overall Fixed Blade with Kraton Inserts

For the other new people that may not know (I had to look):

TAK-1 and RAT-5 = Ontario Knives :)

Dangit its made in taiwan and they want like $70.00 bucks for it. I am torn, I think I will pass.

Get a Benchmade Rant DPT (Drop Point Tactical).
It has very good N690 steel, a nice grippy handle, great nylon sheath with insert, and is very strong and sharp. This knife was my first Benchmade a few years back, and I still have it (I trade most of my old knives).
Plus, It's only about $45 shipped if you buy it online!

That Kabar Bull Dozier looks pretty tempting.

For around $70 to $80 though, I'd rather spend it getting an F1.

scrap yard knives by far.

ve seen people get messed up with pencils, so im not gonna say that a knife would be an ineffective sd implement. but in the comfort of your own home you should hav e apump action shotgun, when someone hears that ca-chunk of a round being chambered they know exactly what it means, they wwill more than likely go back the way they came.

I just received my KaBar Bull Dozier. It is a well balanced, comfortable knife. However, having grown up in Olean, NY (where KaBar knives are made) I was terribly disappointed at seeing the word "Taiwan" on my knife. I may be a little narrow minded, but I am seriously contemplating sending it back. I think I'll trade it for a SOG Gov-Tac.

Where exactly do you think that the SOG Gov-Tac is made?;)

The regular kabar combat knives are petty good for the $. Also the ontario spec plus line is worth cheaking out as they offer many different designs. The Rat-5 or 7 would also be worth a look I think. I'm not a big fan of Cold Steel personally, but they also have some good designs for the $.
