This is my first post here and I want to start by saying that this is an awesome place! I've learned a ton since joining and still feel overwhelmed by all the info this place has to offer.

That being said I am hoping some of you will have an opinion on a folder you could recommend. I'm looking to spend no more than $200 and right now I am leaing toward the Extrema Ratio BF2. As you can see, this knife is both tough and cool. :D

There are so many options out there I'm afraid I may miss out on something tough and/or cool, so I thought I'd ask here before buying. If you guys have any ideas or suggestions, they would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Emerson Commander. Can be had under 200. Definitely a tough folder. They're basically tanks.

... or a benchmade rukus

You might want to look at the Zero Tolerance line if you haven't already. I recently purchased a 0205 and am very happy with it, and the ZT line is held in very high regard on the forums.

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

I've got a BF-1 and it is one great little knife. The BF-2 is slightly larger. The BF-1 is a little sharp-edged, kind of blocky, and I think the -2 is the same. Still a tough piece of work, and elegant in its own way.

I've also got ER Nemesis and MPC, but you don't want to hear about them, just because they blow away all the other recommendations here! :D

All these recommendations are for really big knives, and a knife doesn't have to be big to be tough or cool. Take a look at the Kershaw Shallot and the Boker M-Type. Medium size, very flat so they carry well, good steel. The Shallot is all-metal and only opens with a flipper. The M-Type has a G-10 front slab to lighten it. Both are framelocks.

I just got a Shallot about 6 weeks ago, and can't recommend it enough. All metal, locks like a vault, and is extremely affordable.

+1 to ZT extremely over built.

If your looking for something that will cut well and is light weight look at the Spyderco military.

Others to look at:
Kershaw JYD II composite and SG2
Kershaw Spec bump
TOPS
Spyderco chinook 3

ZT line is awesome very durable. look into the 0500 mudd

The CQD MARK 1 is amazing. I will be taking that knife with me to Afganistan as well with a ZT0200 and a Emerson CQC8 and Lonewolf T3

So any of those i would reccomend.

i had a Mark 1 during training and just beat the heck out of it and it took every bit of it. Never failed me in even the slightest. Then i ended up loosing it in Camp Lejune. dang. So that knife i can tell you will take everything you throw at it . Maybe even a bullet but never done that one so i cant say.

Welcom to BF

Of my own collection, the toughest is my Black Rhino and Rajah 1 by Cold Steel.

Not noticeably less tougher but I expect more cool is my Spyderco Titanium ATR, ZT302 and ZT Mudd (ZT0500).

My most cool is my SG2 Titanium Junkyard Dog II by Kershaw.

Give them a look, 200 bucks is a good figure to start by, with 200 bucks you can probably get not one but two!

(PS: Depending on taste, I seriously think my Falcon and Griffon folder by John Greco is seriously tough and cool!!!)

Greco folders are unbeatable. I got mine at $50 and I think $75. :p
Took some work to get the edge down a bit.

50 and 75! If you see anymore at that price, do me a favor and let me know!!! I paid 110 bucks each for my Falcon, Griffon and Raptor. While I wouldn't get another Raptor (the blade edge hits the backspacer, I had to reprofile my spacer to accomodate but blade is cool), I'd get a Griffon (priority) and a Falcon spare anyday!

The Greco folders are indescribable. They are tough and are good workhorses. The patina that mine developed is really cool and the lockup (gotta twiddle it a bit to get the sweet lockup) is like a shotgun (in sound) and secure. Steel framelocks are much stronger than titanium framelocks of equivalent dimensions and to add more happiness the stop pin is super thick too!

Had mine for 3 years now and it never stopped being my EDC. Did I say it sharpens up nicely and easily too. By the way Esav is right, need a little edge re profiling to get it perfect, edge is kinda thick.

The Benchmade Skirmish 630 is a large tough, titanium handled, frame-lock as you'd want. Cool factor is there too, with it's bejeweled looking color accented handle.
The Spyderco Military (shown here in carbon fiber and S90V steel) is a lighter weight toughie with a cool factor all it's own.

Why not buy 3, 4 or even 5 cheaper knives.
Look at the Kershaw knives or Boker plus line.
I think the Boker plus Trance is a very tough and cool looking knife.

You might also want to check out the Boker plus Hyper and the Kershaw Needs work or Junkyard dog.
Spyderco Tenacious is supposedly a very tough knife as well.

I was going to say Zero Tolerance too. My favorite is the model 0300, which is a Strider colaboration, but it is generally a little over $200.

One that is in the lower end of prices, but a big favorite is the BENCHMADE 550SBKHGSN Griptilian. This model is sand color and has been a big mover, but you can get one in Black. The sand color is a big mover, because of the folks in the military buying them, and family sending them as gifts.

The CRKT M16 series folders are also very popular, and are less pricey.

Thanks,
