recommend a traditional tomahawk

I am looking for a traditional type tomahawk. It will be used for light camping stuff and maybe some throwing. Something with a 1lb head or so (I have a GB Small Forest Axe if I need it). I'd like to be able to remove the head and carry the head and handle separately.

I have seen the Cold Steel ones, and they look like a good deal, but I have disliked Cold Steel for a while, not necessarily for sub-standard products, but just for the politics of the owner. I'd just rather not buy from them. Is there anything comparable, or maybe a little higher end, but similar in style?

Thanks.

CRKT makes a couple traditional style 'hawks based on RMJ designs. Not necessarily more high end than Cold Steel, but they might be an option for you.

H&B and 2Hawks both look really nice by the way. Just not sure I want to spend $125 or wait 6 weeks. I'll have to think about it.

Never saw those before H & B is the way to go like jaymack said. You won't be disappointed.

More like 70 and 2 or 3 week's

I guess I am actually looking for a poled tomahawk. H&B has them for $60-$65 plus shipping, but the wait that they have listed is 6-8 weeks. I am going to call them and see if that is actually what it is or not.

2 hawks standard tomahawk is $100, and the poled ones are $125.

I was looking to take it camping the weekend of the 21st, but I may just go with the H&B and wait. Or may just go with a normal hawk instead of a poled one. I just plan on using it for camp chores more than throwing, so I thought the poled one would be more useful. Its not really a deal breaker though.

Give them a call they just are being realistic on their delivery times. Great people to deal with quality work. Once you get started hard to stop. Sure you already know that. You could also post in the want to buy section for what your looking for good chance you will find what you're looking for.

H&B is the way to go. One of the custom pieces they made for me arrived a week earlier than they quoted.

Coal creek forge is the way to go he has some standard designs or he can forge you up something custom. It is more pricy than the others mentioned but worth every penny and Steve's a great guy to do business with.

You buy entirely based on whim? I don't know Cold Steel from a hole in the ground but you seem to be willing to overlook something, that might be perfectly suitable, merely because of opinion or politics? Fickle is a word you're going to want to look up on Google. I couldn't care if some cat by name of Joe Stalin made my axe as long as it was his best effort and the end quality beat out anyone else's product.

CRKT has a new hawk out that looks similar to Cold Steel's spike and trail hawk. I haven't heard of any review on them.

Then you and I are fundamentally different.

There is more than one company out there that make fine products, but I choose not so support them based on my opinion of the owner or the companies practices / policies in general. There are local businesses that I do not frequent as well, because the owners or the employees are dicks, not necessarily because they sell bad products or services. Call it fickle or whatever you want.

I really don't want to get into a debate about whether or not I should buy a product from Cold Steel. I am sure they are fine, and I am not intending to bad mouth Cold Steel or their products, I just personally choose not to buy them. I doubt I am missing much by not buying one of their $30 tomahawks, and I am willing to bet that I will get a much better product by spending a little more and going with one of the manufacturers that others where kind enough to offer up.

To each his own.

Are they actually available yet? They have been only available for pre-order at the few places I saw them.

but keep in mind, I only use these for throwing, I use my steel hawks, a RMJ Bezerker and a Swamp Rat Crash rat, as actual tools.

Just to let everyone know, I ended up ordering an H&B Forge tomahawk, through The Pathfinder Store.
It is listed on the Pathfinder website as a "Hand Forged Tomahawk", but it is in fact a Polled Camp Axe from H&B Forge. I think it is the small based on the weights listed, but did not ask when I talked with them. The Pathfinder Store had them in stock, and has a $15 off deal right now for Fathers Day, so getting the tomahawk and sheath, and after shipping was $91, which is about the same as buying the same thing direct from H&B, maybe a little cheaper, depending on what shipping from H&B is like. It is supposed to ship today.
Thanks for everybody's help. Happy Father's Day to me!

I did see at least one place that had the CRKT in stock according to the site at least (Palmetto State Armory), but most places (knifecenter included I believe) are back ordered. If I decide I like the tomahawk in general, I might pick one up someday - seems like a decent deal for $50, and I have generally been happy with the few CRKT knives that I have bought.
