Recommend DE blades

Hi,

Just kind of an update. I have been working my way through the Wally World Wilkinson blades. While I think there is probably better blades to be had, I have been getting decent shaves with the Wilkinson's. I did have one blade that only gave me one good shave and then petered out on me. But the remaining blades I've used so far have given three to four shaves. I did readjust my Gillette Adjustable down to 4 from 5 to ease the irritation I was getting.

Now if I could just get more consistent lathers. :)

Have you watched Mantic59's youtube videos? When I made the switch from cartridge to DE I watch all of them and learned a lot, I also got a lot of help here and over at Badger and Blade. Not all soaps are created equal, some are hard to get a good lather and some seem to jump into a luxurious lather just by putting the brush near the bowl:eek: Proraso is one of the easy lather soaps as it Col Ichabod Conk The Gentleman's Quarter was a fairly easy soap to lather too, but they(she) are gone now:(

The DR Harris soap I've been using lately is super-easy to lather. I'm very pleased with it.

Hi,

I have watched quite a few of Mantic59's videos. Not only informative, but just plain well done. I should go back and watch a few of them again though. I have two difficulties it seems. Hard water and tending to use too much water. The first just has to be worked around. But the last couple of shaves I have gotten much better lather by using a dryer brush. And oddly enough, by letting my face dry just a bit after the shower. I have a habit of wetting my face with hot water just before applying the lather. Not a good idea, it just kills the body. So less is more for me!

Hi,

That is a soap brand I want to try. From reading your Soap Opera thread and some other threads around the web, DR Harris gets good reviews. I will need to make a trip to the big and evil TwinCities in 3 or 4 weeks. I was going to see if I could find a store in the Mall of America that would carry such things.

Right now I'm using VDH soap which I can get locally. When I do my part right, it does a workman's job.

I have hard water here to, I could make a lather no problem but I couldn't rinse it off:grumpy: My solution was to use the water from the dehumidifier, I just heat it up in the microwave. I get a beautiful rich lather that rinses off like a dream. Its about the only time I am thankful that I live some place that is humid:eek:

Hi,

I have a dehumidifier in the basement. But I don't think I would get enough water in January in Minnesota.:D Still, I might give it a try this fall yet just to see.

I use tap water.

Every soap has a ratio that you have to figure out, how much water to use. It takes a few tries to find it. That ratio will depend some on the quality of your water. Some are very "picky;" you have to have the exact, correct ratio. Other soaps are much more permissive. For face latherers, a "picky" soap can be a problem because it's more difficult for us to make minor adjustments. One thing I like about th DR Harris product is that it is very permissive.

If you can't find it retail, you can mail order it. I got it from westcoastshaving.com.

I have used most of the brands mentioned but I find Feather blades are the sharpest out of the pack and seem to last the longest. I get a very smooth shave after two passes.

I think you need to try different blades to see what works best for you.
