recommend inexpensive Barlow knife?

A group shot of my babies. I don't care where they are currently made.
They are well made for that reasonable price. Again, they can be sharpened easily, decent steel, fit and finish far above their price. Real users.
A pity to miss them.

If only they were sporting hi-carbon blades I would buy a bucket of them.

Those are the things I like about the stainless bolstered Rite Edge. I also like it costing about half what the RR's cost so I don't feel bad about carrying it without a pouch among the keys. I have been surprised that the wood hasn't shown any wear thus far. The bolsters have some shiny spots but no deep scratches or marks (which I usually get on the nickel bolsters pretty quick). I have been using it pretty hard for a while, and am interested in discovering when it will give out, so I am going to hold off on carrying the Bear and Son until this one fails.

Bartleby, do you have a photo of the Rite Edge? I don't think I've heard of these before. Where do you get them, or where can I look at them? Thanks.

I don't do any on line selling or trading (or even much bragging), so I don't have any pictures, but an image search of Rite Edge barlow wood will bring up some shots from various vendors. It really is just a plain generic inexpensive Chinese version of the pattern with solid unvarnished hardwood (not laminated or pakkawood) handles, solid steel bolsters, and rather thick stainless steel liners. The blades are about the same thickness as the Bear and Sons version I just received. Some obvious shortcuts to hold down price include etching rather than stamping the bolsters (stainless would require changing out the die more frequently), the nail mark is on the clip of the main blade rather than the spine, which gives a wider range of tolerance in where the pen blade sits, and in my example the handle was sanded across the grain. The box has the model number 210601. It came pretty sharp and is easy to resharpen but it is some sort of generic stainless steel not carbon. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info, Bartleby. That should be helpful when I get a chance to start "investigating".
