Hello folks

This may be a boring post but I do want opinions & info from those who know-
I am looking to get one of the larger folding Spydercos’ but just cant make up my mind.
Would love to hear those experienced with such items

Use: will be EDC-used to cut anything & everything [including my lunch!]

Blade: 3.3”+ min. blade length

Lock: must be secure with min freeplay. Speed of opening NOT an issue but strength IS

Design: grippy handle- not metal & robust overall- will be subject to hard use

Tip: sharp tip required for pointy, piercing work

Edge: like the cutting power of serrations but dont know how to sharpen such-is it hard?

Have searched catalogue & forums & would like to hear suggestions.
All constructive responses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

If weight is not a concern then go Manix.

For something a lot more lightweight go for the Military.

No wrong choice here really.

Sigh, my life used to be simple. Wake up, slip Military in pocket, head out the door to save the world.

Now I have to spend valuable time deciding Millie? or Manix?, Millie? or Manix? etc. Both will suit your needs well. I've noticed myself drifting back to using the Military of late. It is a bit more maintenance free than the Manix, which doesn't like sand and grime, as well as being marginaly easier to carry.

My Military is even winning out against the Pacific Salt for when I head to the beach - I'm so used to drying and re-lubing a knife after exposure to sea water that the H1, while amazing, holds no great advantage for me - except for long Kayak trips. The Military can do everything from being a servicable fishing knife, to light chopping, kitchen duties, fine stuff like splinter removal and whittling/shaving.

Sorry I can't be more help with the decision mate and I suspect you are going to end up with them both anyway

Just my 0.02, but I've got a Chinook I and it's one of my favorites.

Imagine a buck 110 on steroids, heavy and bomb-proof. Comfortable in any grip I choose and keeps a great edge.

Won't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a HD blade.

Who was it that was stumping for something ridiculous like a

............LARGER NATIVE ?........................

Who WAS that masked man?

:D

Manix, Military, ParaMilitary, or maybe a Lil' Temperence. Get a 50/50 blade for the best of both worlds.

Sounds like a good idea to me!

I really like my para for EDC but if I wanted a larger blade the military would be my first choice combined with a Vess Leatherworks sheaths makes for a great carry combo :D :D

After owning both a Chinook and a Manix and selling them I would have to say to go for the Military or the Para-Military. I particularly like the Salt 1 I just finished modifying for EDC but the Para-Mil is my close second that sees a little pocket time also. The blade is a tad short for the size of the handle but it is not a small knife. Certainly, it is capable of performing much like a larger knife than it's size would indicate.

Go plainedge, and sharpen with a medium/coarse stone, and strop to a shaving edge. Serrations are great for a few tasks, but if you use them alot keeping them pristine and razor sharp is a pain. If you want to try out the serrations on a large knife to see how you like them grab a rescue or endura with full serrations before getting them on a more expensive knife.

The PE Military, as u812 suggested, would do just fine for what your asking.

IMO, a PlainEdge can do just about everything that a SpyderEdge will do, as well as being easier to sharpen. The 'just about' would come into effect when cutting fibrous materials, where the SpyderEdge would excel.

The Millie is a linerlock. I've EDC'd my Millie for a year or two now w/ zero complaints. Does all you ask of it. My "go to" Spyderco. You can pick the ATS-34 vairiants up pretty cheap aftermarket.

Ok, I will say it again but I will try to be a little more convincing.

Endura FRN. Plain, serrated or combo -- your choice.

Light, durable, easy to clean and maintain and cheap. You could buy two for the price most others are suggesting and have a spare or two edge choices. Only the Police and Military are slightly longer. Check out Ted's awesome site (http://www.ted.tweakdsl.nl/spyderco/resized.html) You cannot go wrong with any FRN Spydie.

The best folder around and the S30V is just awesome! The Knife is big but weighs nothing and fits in your pants easy without feeling bulky. This is my go to knife.
