Recommend me a fixed blade

I love the Dozier K-19, I don't know though, it's a $50 or so over my price range, but it really looks like a comfortable knife and the blade geometry looks absolutely beautiful. The Spydie/Perrin looks like a very functional knife as well. Decisions decisions!

I try really hard not to talk people into overspending their budgets, but you really can't go wrong with a Dozier. You won't believe just how much ergonomic genius goes into those designs until you hold one and use it for a while. Bob is known for producing some of the best cutters out there, but his grips and sheaths are as exceptional as his blades. The prices are not cheap, but they are still among the best bargains in the knife world.

There all good. What about a Becker? Busse? CRKT?

I've been seeing a lot of good knives with all of the advice.

A big part of my knife choice is the handle. I tend to shy away from the cylindrical handles, and I like the Becker Crewman except the handles are bulky . I also don't really dig the Busse Combat tactical looks. I thought the 140 was a nice compromise between too tactical and too boring, but I really don't go for blade coatings. I'll look around some more and if I see something I fall in love with I'll let you know :D

I am liking that BlackJack Trail Guide II...

I too love a good shaped handle. The problem with production handles is that there seems to bee too much time involved in shaping. I think thats why alot of them are boxy. Not to advertise but I thought you would like to see what I have done to make my knives have a better grip.

Again... I am not trying to advertise for myself but a custom may be what you need to look into. There are many makers who are afordable and many part time makers will work with you on a price. Its just a thought my man :D

Try to find a maker in your area or go to a custom show and get you a nice piece of steel.

My favorite small fixed blade is my Buck Strider Solution (model 888).

It fits my hand well and I like the blade shape. ATS 34 and Bos heat treat for the blade. It's a little more than you want to spend but its a great knife.

You might consider Geno Denning's
knives. Outstanding.

Alright, guys, you got me!

I have a birthday coming up in December, and then there's Christmas.

SO..

If you would be so kind as to list custom makers who put out a sweet fixed blade that meet at least my length specs for under $200, I would not hesistate to make my first fixed blade a hand-crafted one :D

hm, you might check with David Winston. i dunno if he works with micarta as he seems to prefer natural materials, but he makes very affordable ones in D2 with a satin finish. example: http://winstonknives.blademakers.com/Image_Knife.asp?Ident_Value=1118

also worth looking @ is Gene Ingram. he definitely works with micarta. example: http://geneingramknives.blademakers.com/Image_Knife.asp?Ident_Value=1134

i can't guarantee they can do it for under $200. but with my minimal experience with customs, i'd say they're worth checking out.

~4.5-5" blade
Single, plain edge
Non-tanto
Full tang
Available in satin finish

Preferences:
Micarta scales
Lanyard hole
Nice sheath (Kydex or leather)
Check out Bark River Knife & Tool.

I have a Rogue, Micro-Canadian, and Highland -- my Highland is like the third knife down on their home page, with bone stag handles. I traded the same knife with green micarta handles for it. You can get green, black, blue, orange :) micarta and G-10 and all manner of stag, bone stag, or exotic woods, for the asking.

Convex blades of A2, leather sheaths, Normark already has kydex for some of them.

Read Beating on the Highland by Buzzbait.

Another vote for the Bark River models! I have two (forager and mini-canadian) and they are great knives. And they fit in your budget, too.

I second the vote to scan the F/S forums. You can really find killer deals on anything from productions to customs.I've sold a few myself for 50-60% of what I paid for them new,and usually never used them while I owned them.I would start looking daily in all the knife f/s forums everywhere, and your patience will pay off,and likely stay within your budget.

I contacted Brian from B.Goode knives earlier this morning and he got back to me, and it looks like he's going to be making me a blade  I used an imaging program similar to photoshop to mix together parts of other knives of his and he's up to it.

Edit: For anyone curious, here's what I came up with:

Here's one more to check out-

Twin Blades offers some good looking knives that fit your specs; I don't have one yet, but maybe soon. ;)

Anyway, their Model 8 has: 5 1/8 D2 blade
micarta handle
good looking sheath
options for steel, hande material, etc.

It looks like a lot of knife for $150 or so. Many other models, too.

I would also recomend twinblades. Also look into the jones brothers or graham knives
http://www.grahamknives.com/ for stainless stuff. There are so many makers out there. I am honored you liked what I have done thus far NeedleRemorse. I like the design you put together. Would be a very good user design for sure.

NeedleRemorse - one other thing...check out the for sale by makers area. You will get a good look at different makers and you may see something there you like too.

Thanks Esav and Brian. Twinblades has a good selection, I'll have to keep a bookmark on them, I've got a feeling my knife collecting is going to extend in the fixed blade direction for a while now :D

Feel free to use the composite of my knives with other makers as well....lord knows I have had many makers help me along the way ;)
