Hello BF members.

I’m looking for a new knife in the near future.

I have a love of fixed blades with a blade length under 3.5” or folders with a ~3” blade.

I’m looking for an edc knife.

Steel preference is usually 420HC, 1095 or Sandvik stainless but I could be persuaded into a different steel type.

I’m also from Canada so no autos.

What would you recommend?

So you want fixed or folder? ... the no auto part confuses me eh? (fellow cannuk)

What kind of use do you have in mind?

My EDC is an Esee Izula2 that lives on my belt practically full time. Checks a lot of boxes for me (wicked easy to carry, great sheath, awesome 1095, good ergos, little tank of a knife). As much as I like it, if I had to do it all again with ESEE I'd look hard at the ESEE-3 with 3D handle or the ESEE-3HM. I find the izula overbuilt for most things I need an EDC for (food prep, opening boxes, cutting cordage, incidental woods tasks, even gutting trout and prying at things) For a small size difference (~1.4" bigger) you get a thinner and longer blade and longer handle.

Izula is one of the handiest knives I own simply because it's designed really really well and it's always on me. But I suspect the 3 would be better (for me) for the above reasons.

I am forever misplacing folders I try to EDC so I've about given up on them

Where are you located? If in Calgary area there are a number of excellent knife stores where you can spend some time looking over a wide selection of knifes. Uh, once they re-open, that is, if they survive:oops: the Covid-19 insanity.

I was gifted a small fixed blade made by @samuraistuart and absolutely love it. Give his knives a look in the knife maker's market.

I dont know the length at this time but I always liked the KA-BAR 1117. Most did not like the skeleton handle but to me the blade was so good it covered up its short commings even though I liked the handle. It's also very un-intimidating looking which should keep you clear of trouble. I carried mine in my front pocket.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

1. As sharp_edge sharp_edge said, a price range would help.

2. Would you consider (or prefer) a traditional/slip joint knives (ie. no lock) ?

I'll throw out a few suggestions without knowing a price range for now. Linked to forum dealers for easy reference.

Several color and blade shape options.

I prefer the D2 steel but the AUS 8 is still a good knife.

Price range of 50-$75 CAD or lower, I spend more money on sharpening stones then blades and I can’t explain why. I could be persuaded to go up in price if someone really justified why it was better then something a bit less $$

Fixed or folder, (auto is anything that deploys with the push of a button. They are illegal here.)

Slip joints are cool I really love my two Swiss Army knives but I was looking for more of a locking blade or just a single blade if you know of any non sak slip joints.

I really like the iZula from googling it but not sure about it.

Ok, so $35-53 usd.

Ontario Rat 2 in D2 steel. About $38 usd and a variety of handle colors. I have several of the Rat 1 (3.6" blade) in the D2 steel. Great knives for the $. I think the few extra dollars for the D2 steel is worth it but you could always go for the AUS 8.

CJRB has some other offerings in your price range.

Less options in the fixed blade field ...

It's just a little bit over budget, but what about the Spyderco UK Pen Knife? BD1N steel and it's an absolutely phenomenal knife. It's available with a leaf blade or drop point. You can also upgrade to S110V for a bit more or even a G10/S30V version.

I like the look of the rat2

How would that compare to a tenacious?

Better steel, thinner blade, frn instead of G10, non-locking (has a half-stop), shorter blade, has a finger choil, made in Golden, Colorado, and about $10 more.

Having owned both, I much, much prefer the UKPK.

For a folder, would the Manly Wasp be to small? Or Comrade? Slip joint, not a lock back.

Check ESEE out.
Lots of quality 1095 fixed blades in an EDC size and they've also released some good S35VN stainless stuff as well.
Affordable pricing is nice as well.

For fixed blade EDC, I’d easily recommend the ESEE Izula. The Izula II has a slightly longer handle. Perhaps the Mora Eldris may suit your needs as well.

For folder EDC, the Para 3 LW.

These are just my two cents though. The wonderful thing about this hobby is exploration. Happy hunting. Let us know what knife you pick. :)

Save up your money and snag a GEC if you are able.

Buy once cry once. They are very good pocket knives.
