1. Uses a tool steel, like D2, M2 or any tool steel for that matter. (no stainless steels please, unless its BG-42 :D been dying to try that one out!)

2. Has blade length of about 3-4 inches (not particular about blade shape but spear point or drop point or modified spear or drop point would be good)

3. Handle length of about 4-4.75 inches max (preferred length would be about 4.3 thereabouts)

4. Not particular about handle material

5. Strong lock (I'll admit it... I have a bias against linerlocks but hey, if anyone here has used one in the above configuration that is a linerlock and locks solid, I will be more than happy to try it out.)

Here's the cost part.. about $100 - $120 please

Of course below $100 would be most excellent....:p

Have been researching and keep running into the same few benchmades... are my choices really that limited??

I hope I have been specific enough.... please help if possible

I seem to remember Kabar doing a Bob Dozier folding hunter in D2.

Maybe a search of 1SKS here at Bladeforums might turn something up or perhaps try the KaBar website?

yup.. its the Thorn model I believe... strangely, I just ran into it couple of minutes ago on a search on the internet.

Look at the Spyderco Endura D4, Military, and the BM 710, 610 (Rukus), 615 (Rukus jr.), Skirmish and Skirmish jr. Just to name a few best of the best.

I'm sure you will get some replies stating the Benchmade Griptilian in D2 from Cabelas so I will go ahead and suggest it. Seems to meet most of those requirements and it has the axis lock which some will argue is the strongest lock out there.

Plus it's less than $100. Good luck,

Ryan

These are good posts guys... I didn't know that the Skirmishes and Ruckus also came in tools steels???

Queen makes a Mountain Man in D2 (not one-handed opening, though, if that's a consideration).

4 1/2" closed and lockback. Can be had for about 60bux.

* Not affiliated with Cumberland, but Bill is Good People.

mmm.. this one looks good. One handed opening is not a consideration, it's not gonna be a tactical or anything like that..

OK.. next noob question... I have heard of Queen, but don't really know much beyond that. How is the quality of their knives?

Hi symphonyincminor, I went to their website... saw the 1095 one, but can't seem to locate the one that is pictured..

Can you post a link??

if you want BG-42, the SOG X-42 autoclip is still listed on some sites, and the Case slimlock also uses it. Of course, there's the Military, but it's bigger and more expensive than you listed.

I read somewhere on BF that the BG-42 on SOG is inferior to Spyderco's. Is there any truth behind this statement?

The SOG's are advertised at 60 Rc. Except on AG's site, it lists 61-63, but is also out of stock. I don't know if they changed the heat treat mid production, or if there's a typo one way or the other.

I don't know what Spyderco has them treated to.

I recommend the Benchmade 710. It's a great all around folder, and the Axis lock is stronger than you'll ever need. The new ones are available in D2. If you can find the discontinued M2 version, all the better. I have 2 M2s, and they're great.

Here you go. Queen doesn't keep up with their website very well, and it's sort of outdated. Cumberland Knife Works has a very extensive collection in stock, and Bill (the owner) is a fantastic guy. Look under the Bird's Eye Maple and Cocobolo collections for the D2 versions.

I've found that their quality, overall, is very good (in the world of traditional folders). You'll come across some criticisms like: the edges on some of the D2 knives are ground too obtuse, too much blade play in some models, and not enough snap in some of the slipjoints. The fit-and-finish on my Mountain Man was dead-on. No play, solid lock-up, and really nice pattern in the wood. Had to thin the edge out a little, but not really a problem (I do this to all my knives). The greatest thing about ordering from Bill is that he'll hand-pick a knife that is up to your standards, if you request it. I haven't been disappointed yet!

ETA: You used to be able to custom order a Buck 110 in BG-42. If you look around on eBay you can (sometimes) find one, usually for under $100. Paul Bos heat-treated BG-42 - don't get much better than that! And hardheart, Spyderco hardens theirs to 61 RC.
